PC Speakers or Receiver Route?

Hey guys I am looking to upgrade my 5.1 audio system and I heard going the receiver with "real" speakers route is a better bang for your buck. I know very little about audio so I thought I would come here for suggestions on what to get. I will hook it up to my PC and play movies, music and games through it. My price limit is $500. I dont want to go any higher.

I was looking at the Logitech Z906 and the Edifier S550 before I came across the info about buying a receiver and satellites.

a good sound card and good pc speakers is probably your best bet. get an asus xonar DX sound card.

then get a 5.1 set, or a 2.1, and add three speakers. I really don't know much about speakers, so I leave specifics to the others....

The reciever route with some nice speakers will definately sound better than a logitech system... For 500 get this setup and I promise you that you will love it!

I actually have the Asus Xonar DX Sound card haha. I was thinking of wasting some money and getting the Creative X-Fi Titanium that Logan chose on his old $3200 gaming/editing build cause I like the bragging rights of over-the-top hardware.

I vote recievers! You most likely already have a shitty old stereo somewhere you can use. You also have alot more options as to what speakers you wanna run.

If I was to get this setup, will I need anything extra like cables or adapters to use on my PC? That setup seems pretty good, I will do a bit more research and might actually pick those up.

no real reason to. the xonar you have is pretty good, your probably don't need anything better. besides, creative is crap. their drivers are horrible.

how would he hook the receiver up to his pc?

Thanks for your input! You got any suggestions on specific receiver and speakers setup for my price range? Or any good online retailers that ship to Canada that would have what I am looking for?

hmm okay, thx for the info. I noticed the driver support on the Xonar sound cards arent that good either. I am using the Third-party Xonar Unified Drivers atm: https://brainbit.wordpress.com/2010/07/19/asus-xonar-unified-drivers/

You can get a connector for about 5 bucks. Something along the lines of these. Mine was like 17$ but it's super nice.

I've been in the audio game a while. Dayton audio and pioneer are both well renowned brands and I have used their products. Go for what i recommended. Here is the adpater you need to hook up your pc. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=240-066
