PC random instantaneous shutdown under heavy use or stability testing

Need a little help with an irritating problem.

So I've made a new build last month and the PC had been running fine for that time, but then I've started playing war thunder which then led my computer to shutdown instantaneous at random when playing the game. Sometimes I could run the game less then an hour before it would shutdown and other times it would run for the whole day without any shutdown. That led me to believe that it was the game that was at fault. But then I've started thinking I should test my system stability (Which I hadn't done before now).

So a few days ago I installed Prime95 and FurMark to test the CPU or GPU. The FurMark test ran fine for 12 hours straight without any problems. But when I started Prime95 the system would shutdown after 5-10 Min. And even faster if I run FurMark along side Prime95.

Does anyone have a thought what might be the problem?
I am leaning towards a faulty PSU but could it be something else?

There is not a single problem when using the computer for daily use or when playing BF4 or DS2, those game can run all day without a single problem.

It's not a heat problem, I've sat for 30 Min to 1 hour watching temps, with Corsair Link and Asus AI Suite 3. And all temp are within good parameters.
Also the GPU worked fine in my old system so am pretty sure it's not the GPU.
The system has not been OC, it is running standard out of the box configuration.

Setup:
CPU: I7-4790k
GPU: 1x 980GTX
MotherBoard: MAXIMUS VII GENE
CPU Cooler: Corsair H110iGT
PSU: Corsair HX1000i
RAM: KINGSTON 16GB 2400MHz

I was having an almost identical probably but mine was stress test ram no crash stress test cpu no crash stress test gpu crash. currently i am rmaing my motherboard as the gpu doesn't crash in other computer. and other gpu would still crash in main system too.

i too had a 4790k and a 980 but my motherboard was a asrock, i think i overheated it because it had little airflow across the actual board components ie south bridge and vrm.

anytime i was to load up the gpu it would cause a crash after some time, i moved all components to my other pc and no more crashes also put other components onto the suspected motherboard and it still crashed.

if you can use the power supply from your other system to run your current one.. if it still crashes i would say your motherboard died like mine did.

My PC still works. I've ordered a new PSU to replace the one I've have now but if there is no difference then I will just return it again. And then try something else.

as did mine, unless i tried playing a game or loading the system.

So it was your motherboard that was at fault?

Maybe just one of the cores is bad and when running apps that load all cores its causing the problem. Remember its different physical cores so there may be one bad core and five good ones.

For me I believe so since i have all but the cpu and motherboard in my other system which does not crash. and i don't think it is my cpu since i stress tested that by itself which never crashed.

for you it could be a power issue, but since you don't crash during games i don't know as mine did crash after some time when gaming.

is it blue screeing or just out right poof power off as iff you unplugged it?

Its only happening when am playing War Thunder or testing. There is no blue screen, only thing happening is as if someone unplugged the power.

Well if the new PSU doesn't fix it, then I can try a new CPU.

  • (If havent already) Update BIOS and test again >> http://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_VII_GENE/HelpDesk_Download/
  • Also - run your RAM @1600 (just choose a different XMP in the bios) in the meantime, and memtest86 it.
  • check the inside of all the power plugs from the psu for anything dodgy like plastic goop.
  • remove gpu, & test with old psu.
    • I've installed the newest BIOS for the motherboard but it died again with same PSU.
    • I tried testing the RAM with 0 errors using memtest86.
    • The inside of the PSU plugs is clean.
    • I'm running the new PSU now, will just have to wait and see.

If this doesn't work, then I will just have to try a new CPU or motherboard...

Any updates? Did exchanging the psu work ? I'm having the exact same issue with a very similar build. I am about to rma my psu, but wanted to see if that resolved your issue or was it so something else?

The other PSU didn't change a thing, it was still crashing. So I've changed it back to the old PSU.

However I've did change the setting "Ai Overclock Tuner" in bios to XMP, then changed my ram to run at 2400 MHz (The ram was recommended to run at 2400 MHz) and then let the bios do the rest. There hasn't been a single crash since.

I've been playing GTA 5 and running CPU/MEM test when am not at home. Or just trying the same test that was crashing the PC before. But still not a single crash.

(But I've still got another CPU and Motherboard sitting behind, to try out if it should crash again)
