PC Musts!

Hello there everybody!

My name is Matt, and I have been around the forums for just over a month now. Maybe you've seen be around.

Anyway, I am going to be getting my first build later this month, featuring the R9 280x, so I should be able to run most games on optimal. Anyway, this is my question...

What games are 'musts' on PC?

I have asked some of my friends, are so far I have:

Skyrim

Garry's Mod

Left 4 Dead 2

I know it's not much, but what games are considered 'Must gets' on PC?

P.S.These will not be the only games I get. I am planning to buy quite a lot of indie games, as I really like the look of some of them but have not been able to play them to my liking. I will also be picking up games like Crysis 3 and other AAA titles.

P.S #2. Anyone know any really good destruction racing games. The sort of game when you bump someone, they fly sideways off the bridge, breaking apart as they fall, then crash and explode. You know what I mean, like when you hit them parts come off, etc, etc.

Counter Strike

Hi Matt

A lot depends on you're style of game, but what you have is a good start.

Skyrim is an amazing game (and can be modded to high heaven)

I can recommend..

Rome Total War 2

Warframe

World of tanks

Battlefield 4

War Thunder

Fallout 3

There are soooo many brilliant games out there for PC. Enjoy my friend

Keep alook out for Star Citizen in the future looks to be an epic game.

Thanks

Cej

I can recommend

wow you got a great card im jelly  i recommend half life and baldur's gate

Total War series. Old or new, there's nothing like it on console.

Mount and Blade Warband. There are few games that are totally unscripted and so brilliant for playing mods. Check out the Clash of Kings mod if you're a fan of the Game of Thrones series/books.

Fallout series happens to be quite good on PC.

Rising Storm/red Ochestra 2 (bundled together). It is an FPS game but it moves away from those typical AAA run and gun titles that do not promote team work. As a matter of fact, you will probably find yourself moving away from AAA titles because they have no level of originality or uniqueness.

Trine 2. Cheap, worth a mention. Relaxed puzzle platform type game.

Kerbal Space Program. If you can figure much of it out, it makes for a nice game. Building all kids of craft for various purposes. Go and colonise other planets. Great list of mods for this game.

Chivalry. Very simple medieval first person slasher.

Pistol made a post a while back with tons of suggestions about what games make the PC great. Try looking there: https://teksyndicate.com/forum/pc-gaming/official-pc-exclusives-thread/154033

Mount and Blade Warband. Totally forgot about this game amazing,

Thanks Berserker for the Mod heads up will give this a go love game of thrones.

Thanks

Cej

Really easy to install. You just unpack the rar file and post it in the folder provided in the game called "modules". There's a hotfix you have to download for the latest patch. Works really well. No bugs found yet.

ACOK will appear in the drop down with "native" and or "Napoleonic wars"

Black Mesa is free

Doom and Doom 2 with the Brutal Doom mod. Also Dwarf Fortress if you can overcome the learning curve, and of course the Half-Lifes and all associated mods/derivatives

Minecraft! Totally forgot about that game.

Oh, where to begin...

First off, a good car-crash racing game you might like is Burnout Paradise. Could also try Dirt: showdown.

I'm more into the racing sims, but I'll play a good racing arcade game if it's fun. :)

As others have mentioned: Skyrim, Black Mesa, Half-life 2 + episodes + Gary's mod, Tomb Raider (the newest one), Bio Shock Infinite, Crysis 3...

Some great indie games and less expensive games I've really enjoyed: FTL, Fez, Super Meat Boy, Don't starve, Trine 2...

+1 for Minecraft. Can't forget that one. :)

There are so many. Just go on Steam and watch for deals/sales. They happen all the time. You just missed the Steam autumn sale, but there will be more... Also checkout www.humblebundle.com they have deals all the time.

I'm going to assume you mean games that really push a PC in a direction consoles can't go.

The Arma series simply cannot be done on consoles. The complexity of the AI and scale of scenarios allowed is just incredible, though it does have some rough edges, mostly related to performance. It's also one of the few games that will use just about every key on your keyboard. Also, very moddable.

The Total War series has been mentioned. As far as real-time strategy goes, Total War is probably the "biggest". Tons of dudes on screen at one time, great graphics, and realistic tactics. It's fairly slow paced, so you have time to actually think about what you're doing. Or just zoom in really close and watch.

Kerbal Space Program is an amazing game all around. Somehow, anything you do in this game is fun. Even crashing and failing really hard. Absolute must-have if you like science/astronomy or sandbox games. Or blowing things up.

If you want a competitive multiplayer strategy game, look into Wargame: Airland Battle. It has over 800 real Cold War-era units; tanks, helicopters, infantry, tank destroyers, AA missile launchers, etc. You name it, they have it, or at least something close to it. It's very focused on combined arms tactics. You can't just throw a massive column of tanks at the enemy and expect to win.

The Men of War series also shares a lot of those traits, but it's a bit slower paced and on a smaller scale. It's also very playable as a single player game.

If you want insane levels of depth in your strategy games, look at Paradox's grand strategy games. Hearts of Iron 3 is my favorite, personally. Europa Universalis 4 came out a few months back, and it's relatively accessible for new players. Generally, these games cover the whole world at some point in history, and you can play as any nation which existed at the time. They are not balanced, and they are not intended to be balanced. For example, Hearts of Iron takes place in World War 2. If you play as Germany, you will have a very different game from someone who plays as Tibet.

The Civilization series has been a staple of PC gaming for decades now.

The same can be said for SimCity, but EA ruined that with the new one. If you want a SimCity game, you want SimCity 4. It is the city building game. It has tons of mods available, and still has a very large community, even though it came out 10 years ago.

Minecraft should definitely be played, or at least be aware of it. I don't think it's really that great of a game, unless you're playing on a server with a bunch of other people, but it's gaming culture at this point. Minecraft references are everywhere.

I'm sure I'm missing something important.

I would go grab Fallout: New Vegas, as well as Fallout 3 when they go on sale. They go down to aobut $5 for the versions with all DLC. Trine 2 is anlso a must have for PC, great Indie game. I hear lots about FTL being great, got it in a Humble Bundle but haven't played it yet. Mark of the Ninja is a great Indie game, as well as Gunpoint. Surgeon Simulator is fun too goof off around in, it is like Operation, but super hard and frustrating. I would also say that every single Half-Life game is a must have, along with calssic shooters like System Shock 2. GTA: San Andreas is my favorite GTA so far. I haven't gotten the chance to play GTA 5 so don't quote me on that. Oh, and Battlefield games are epic on the PC, with huge 64 player battles that can run on most machines. I also have been having fun with old shooters like Duke Nukem, it is all up to your playstyle.
