PC for my parents, how long will it last?

Hi guys, so i'm thinking of buying a PC for my mum for Christmas and I was wondering what you think the life span of these 2 computers would be?

I was thinking that the 1st one would last about 5-10 years and the second one would hopefully last or more less for as long as my mum will ever need a PC.

She just does emails, online banking and just regular internet stuff, maybe some word you know?

Also if you have any critiques on parts then throw them my way!

If all they need is a basic internet machine, you could consider something like a chromebook (http://www.newegg.com/Chromebooks/SubCategory/ID-3220?Tid=22091&Order=RATING) that costs half of your proposed lower cost computer. You even get access to Microsoft Office Online for free!

It's a different OS so it'd just make things harder. Plus she needs Outlook and already knows word etc. But thanks for the advice :)

I wonder if a Athlon 5350 build would work for this application...

as long as they get cleaned out every few months. they should both last 20 years for basic web surfing & email. except for the ssd's which may not last 4 years.  sometime in the next few years you'll need to buy a gpu if they plan to watch video when 4k+ goes mainstream. not yet though most cards don't support vp9 and HEVC codecs. the Pentium G3258 rig will be at even more of a disadvantage  decoding them due to the lack of AVX instructions.

First build: Dont need a overclocking cpu for that motherboard. An i3 4150 would be a better match. Surf the internet light gaming maybe with something like a 750 ti. Second build seems a little overkill for just a internet surfer. 5 years is kind of a long time to ask. So maybe overkill would be better?

Yeah what do you think? In NZ they're the same price as the Pentium and i'm sure there'll be a similar priced and specked Mobo. Do you think the performance would be beneficial? And also, what do you think of the longevity of the chip will be with upgrades to chrome and Windows in mind considering it's already quite old?

She wouldn't be using for 4K ever most likely. i'm gonna give her my old 1080p screen and the Pentium is good enough for 1440p/1080p 60fps Youtube so it should be fine.

Yeah the SSD would probably be the first thing to go.. Should I maybe consider an SSHD?

The only time she'd be putting things on it would be if she ever started using a camera, but she probably still wouldn't do it anyway. Otherwise she wouldn't be using any space at all.

If you BIOS update the Mobo then you can and i'll probably do that. Plus, the i3 is a lot more expensive. How would the i3 compare in longevity with chrome and Windows uprgades and updates in mind compared to the i5?

I just checked NZ prices - not worth it lol.  Too pricy, especially the mobo.

Keep in mind that hardware and software are two different things.Hardware is going to be the same til end of life. My guess would be that everything is going mobile and cloud services. So lower end hardware will have a longer usable lifespan because of it.

cloud services are just a passing fad if they don't have bandwidth behind them. if we don't get upgraded to fiber or comanies like verizon or comcast get their way and we get capped.

@Beheeemoth

a 15000 RPM drive is a better choice if you can afford it. not only is it more reliable it's faster in most cases then a sshd.
