Hi there! i just had my first PC Build (Actually I am yet to build, just got the components). I am a student and wanted to get a budget Workstation PC for photoediting, designing, videography, 3D, etc. I am not too much into gaming.
This is my configuration:
1) AMD fx-8350; 2) Zotac gtx-770 2Gb Non-AMP; 3) Intel 335 series 180 Gb SSD for boot and program installation;
The Asrock 970 extreme 4 is not realy a great for a FX8 core cpu. Those cheaper asrock boards have well known overheating vrm and mosfet issues, wenn running a FX 8 core on it. i would personaly recommend a better board.
Asus M5A99FX pro R2.0 or something similar.
Since i suppose you are on some kind of a limited budget, i think you could also concider a intel Xeon 1230V3 with a cheaper B85 of H87 board. or if you could afford a Xeon 1231V3 with a H97 or cheap Z97 board. Offcourse these xeons are not realy overclockable, but still they have a much better single threaded performance. then a FX83xx has. so its a bit depending on the games you play, but overall in cpu demending games like mmo´s, skyrim and such, an intel cpu will be better. so keep that in mind.
So long story short FX8350 will still be a good choice for you, if you are on a very limited budget. however i would personaly look for one of the 2 xeon options if you could afford it. (depending on the games you play!!)
As said before. I am not too much into gaming. Infact I might not even install more than a couple or two and wanted to build it for designing and stuff which do not require very good single core performance and demand multi-core support and also CUDA was recommended to me from insiders of the industry. so.
Well, if you're loading the CPU, you're going to be stressing the motherboard. That ASRock board is pretty low quality and has a mediocre 4 phases for the CPU. I would highly recommend going with a better board, such as the MSI 970 Gaming or Asus M5A99X Evo R2.0
Gaming or not, Mystery Angel got it right here. You should stay away from those Asrock boards unless it's the really high end ones.
For your use-scenario I would also try to fit one of the above Xeons into the budget, along with something like the Asus H97-Pro. The intel processors will have a better single-core AND multi-core performance.
Also, 16Gb of RAM should be minimum for what you will be doing.
