I want it to game at 1080p, and other uses, maybe some video editing here and there. Thought I might go for the X99 to keep it future proof. Or should I use an X79?
Also is that graphics card a good choice? Or is there a different one you would recommend?
Gaming > then the x99 platform is a big waste of money. If you were full on with the rendering/editing then maybe it would be worth the extra. Drop the cpu down to 1150 (i5, i7), then up the ante on the gpu - 980, 970, fury, 390/390x.
xeon (i7 minus the igpu), 8gb 390x, 16gb ram, good h97 mb, 500gb ssd, 3tb hdd, really nice case and amazing psu. ~ the cooler isnt really needed for the xeon but its mainly for looks and quietness. ~ under budget to allow for shipping
For gaming at 1080p, with some minor video editing, a mainstream I5 will be a pretty decent choice. The top-tier intel 8-cores are really for people who do a lot of serious video editing. So, save yourself the $600, and put it towards a bigger, better, harder, faster GPU.
