Pay What You Want: Learn to Code Bundle

I came across this and thought it was worth sharing. Pay what you want to learn how to code in the style of Humble bundle.
Gizmag is offering commercial courses in a pay what you want type of model with some of the money going to charity.

Right now you can pay $13.61 for the whole bundle.

Have you bought the bundle?

Not yet I'm seriously considering it. I'm just mindful that if my Steam library is anything to go by I tend to buy stuff just because it's a great deal but rarely look at again. I have always wanted to learn how to code but I'm more than aware of my personality flaws. I have great ideas but seldom carry them out. So many unfinished projects... So I'm going to have to think long and hard to see if it is worth me starting something I fear I will never finish.

I agree, I'm the same way. I also have done some programming for classes before and know my weaknesses as well. I'm a bit curious of the platform but at least it looks like its lifetime access to the videos and material.

For those wanting to learn about programming, there are tons of great free resources online, the advantage of paying for a course like this is generally they have half decent production values, but more importantly when you pay for a course (in my experience) you're more likely to finish it, even if its just a few bucks.

That said, do some research about the quality of these courses before you buy them. I personally think MIT's intro to CS course is a great place to start (So is Harvard's CS50), both are available online for free.

I purchased it right away and, so far, I watched the introduction of the Git course.
I'm really liking it and, damn for 13 bucks there is some real value there. I don't think that I can come back with a review in time before the sale ends (expecially with finals starting Monday) but so far I have to say it looks promising!
As explorer said, there are plenty of resouces available for free online but they might be a little scattered: having a central hub like this might help you focus better and set you in a better mood for learning, which is always nice.

I just bought the bundle, and will be looking at some of the tutorials now. I don't have much use of it myself, but I thought it might be nice to have.

Rough judgements based on quickly browsing and quick viewing

Web developer

It looks like a very extensive and valuable course for anyone with no experience or knowledge within HTML + CSS, JS, PHP + MySQL. There are chapters which divides the categories so if you know HTML+CSS, but not JS or PHP, then you can skip to the parts relevant to you. The teacher also seems high quality, with an easy-to-understand american accent. Course is from udemy.

Learn linux in 5 days

It looks like a good beginner's course, which covers how to use the shell. Based on the episode titles it looks like it'd be a great introduction to anyone serious about learning the shell. Quickly skipped through an episode, looks like a lecture kind of tutorial, with a good teacher who's easy to understand.

Cloud computing with AWS

Looks like a smaller course, of course focused on AWS. Seems to be a lectured based tutorial too. Easy to understand accent, but a bit quiet.

Git

Seems to a very good course. Chapters cover installation, github quick start, installing a text editor, basics, visual merge/diff tool installation, comparison, branching and merging, rebasing, and stashing. There are multiple episodes in each chapter, and the teacher seems to be serious about teaching -- ie no "Sup guys, so today uhh... we're gonna be uh learning", but the episodes seem to be planned out ahead. Teacher speaks slowly and calmly so it's easy to follow along with the graphics and text.

Ruby

The tutorial starts with the teacher explaining this is not a beginner's course, and that if you've never programmed or used Ruby before this is not a course for you. I'm not familiar with Ruby, but I have dipped my toe in it before. I think I might have use of this course though.

The lessons seem to be high quality, and easy to follow along with. Good, easy to understand, teacher.

PHP

Looks to cover a good bit of PHP, and at the end an introduction to object orientation. Looks like a pretty good course, only downside I can say now is the accent. The teacher has a very thick indian accent, which can be troublesome for some to understand -- however I don't think it will be a major problem for most.

Responsive web design

This is my least favourite subject in programming. It's really not my thing, but this teacher seems to love it. Looks like a lot of subjects in web dev has been covered (it's a $200 course after all), and the teacher looks like he knows his thing. Even though he has a bit of a Swedish accent, he's easy to understand.

Python

This course has a ton of episodes, which seems to confirm the "become a professional python programmer" name. Looking through a bit of the videos it looks like a high quality course, with a decent teacher who knows his thing.

AngularJS

Lots of episodes as well, looks like it covers a lot of Angular (nothing I'm familiar with, nothing I want to get familiar with either). Based on quickly looking through a few videos it looks like the teacher knows how to teach well, and has planned out his episodes ahead of time. He's also easy to understand.

Summary

This is a high quality package with a lot of good learning material, with good teachers. No "Sup guys, how's it going, ultimatecodehaxx3r69 here", or screw ups in the middle of an episode -- but these are made by professional, and it's noticable. If you're a beginner wanting to learn Angular, web development, python, linux shell, AWS, git, php (+mysqli), or someone who wants to get a better understanding of Ruby I'd say $13 is worth to spare.

Is this a one time payment? Or is it per-month? I'm considering this as well. I need to learn web development.

It's one time.

Well I have pull the trigger on buying this package. At the very least the Linux course will be useful.

Anyone wanting to get into (ethical) cracking will probably be interested in this as well.

I bought it, because I had $10 in credit, so I just had to pay a mere $2. Thought it could come in use some day, or at least be fun to run through when bored.

Just discovered they are also offering a "white Hat" Hacking courses as well...

That's the one I was considering.

I picked both of them up. I've spent $27 on much less useful things than this.

I'm half way through the Linux course. Not bad, not bad at all...

I actually got the white hack bundle. For now it's not that bad.

Its been awhile since this was posted, anyone want to offer some insight on how well this bundle worked out for those that purchased it?

The Linux course was good, unfortunately I reverted to type and I have not looked at the other courses. I have the world's shortest attention span and never finish anything.
