P5800X Question

Regarding the P5800X is there any CPU bottlenecks either core or speed wise that will stop it from getting the maximum performance out of it.

A friend bought one recently and he has a PCI-E gen 4 m.2 to u.2 adapter going from the main M.2 slot (cpu lanes) on an AMD system and while the sequentional speeds are in-line with the advertised speeds, the low queue depth speeds seem to be lacking by about 80-100mb

Correction: 40-50Mb lacking

Can you tell us exactly what hardware he has? What’s the CPU? What capacity is the P5800X and is this a passive M.2 to U.2 adapter or one with a redriver? What connection type is going from the adapter to the U.2? There are a few different options. The cable can matter too, how long is it?

Awesome first post btw

System specs: 5800X3D - 32GB 3600MHZ - X570S CARBON MAX WIFI - 4070 - 800GB P5800X -STARTECH M.2 TO U.2 PCI-E Gen 4 Adapter ( unsure about passive/redriver )

Unsure about his cable size, hes running Windows 11 23H2 with VBS etc off

I’m guessing the adapter is model M2E4SFF8643 from startech. This does not have a redriver.

So the cable length will definitely matter more without a redriver since M.2 slots are designed for short direct connections and this is PCIE 4.0. Wendall has a video with a recommendation for reliably converting an M.2 slot for use with a U.2 drive you may want to have your friend look at titled “The Holy Grail, Finally Found: U.2 to PCIe4 Adapters that Work!”.

What are the speeds he is getting currently?

Was able to help him in the end, he had very restrictive settings for his 5800X3D (PBO)… I put it back to stock and he gained nearly all the drives performance back

Awesome, glad you were able to figure it out!
