Overclocking FX6300

Hi Everyone,

Below is a list of my parts:

  • AMD FX6300 Black Edition
  • Asrock 970 Extreme4 Motherboard
  • Sapphire Vapor-X Radeon HD 7770 1GB GDDR5 Memory
  • Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 16GB (2x8) DDR3 1600Mhz CL10 RAM
  • Kingston HyperX 120Gb SSD
  • Seagate 1TB 3.5inch Hard Drive
  • Corsair 600W PSU (80+ Certified)
  • Cooler Master Hyper 212

With my motherboard/ cooling what is a safe overclock for my CPU?

Could you please post all the values that need to be set in the BIOS (This is my first OC and I haven't got a clue what I'm doing)

Thanks for your help!

Every CPU is different, and some over clock better than others of identical models. I'd advise you to do some researching before attempting. There are numerous over clocking tutorials online. Just Google "how to over clock FX 6300"

I will say that it is safe to over clock with your CPU motherboard combo.

Try 1.4375 vcore and change the multiplier until it hits 4.5Ghz (should be 22.5x) Make sure your temps stay under 62c. Also if that voltage is stable you can keep lowering it one increment at a time then stress test for 15min and repeat until it becomes unstable. Bump it back up to where it was stable and that can lower your temps a bit.

What is the default vcore on the FX6300? Also what about the other bios settings?

Thanks for your help by the way!

Can follow general principles of these guides:

I don't know the stock vcore but out of the box the voltage is probably on auto. The only settings you should have to change for now is the multiplier and vcore. Also you could try to add more CPU/NB voltage to help with stability

As a first time overclocker, the LAST thing the OP should be trying to do is adjust voltages on the CPU, much less the NB. What he should be doing is trying to get a feel for the CPU, stress testing, temp management, etc by trying to see what kind of OC he can get on stock voltage. The only setting a first time OCer should be adjusting is the multiplier.

I like to dive in and get my hands dirty personally. My first overclock, I read a guide, and got to it!

With trial and error, as long as the OP isn't going over max voltage (around 1.5v ish) or max core temp (about 60C) then really what's the harm?

Unless he's going to have someone there to walk him through everything and basically TEACH him he is going to have to work through it himself, and yes probably make a few mistakes along the way.

Maybe I should note I have an Asrock Extreme 4 motherboard. Apparently these aren't that great for overclocking?

I don't think that motherboard will be a problem. I overclocked my brothers FX 6300 to 4.5Ghz with a $70 MSI board. It's stable and he has not run into any problems yet.
