Os?

Hey,

Good news everyone (Or at least those who are annoyed of seeing questions by me), this will probably be my last question directly related to my first build.

So, the thing is, my school has a deal with Microsoft, and that deal gets me Windows 7 OS for $15, which is awsome.  My worry lies in the fact that the word upgrade is in the title.  The title shown below:

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade 32/64-bit (English) (Student Option) - Download

So my worry is that I need to be upgrading my OS, but because I am building a system from scratch I won't be allowed to put the OS on my comp, as it needs to update.

But I am hoping that it just says upgrade because it is an option if you need to, but if your building a fresh computer you can just put set it up without an update.

So can someone tell me if my hopes are right, or my fears are right.

Thanks in advanced.

i'm pretty sure it needs an existing windows installation

I looked more into it and it said something about a clean instalation.  Here is the paragraph about it:

If you switch from a 64-bit version to a 32-bit version of Windows, or vice versa, you'll need to do a custom (clean) installation. This may also impact other parts of your system.

Does this mean that it would be reset to a state of nothing so in essence it is the same as installing it on a fresh computer like the one I want to build, and thus I am safe?

To install it as a clean install without a prior Windows installation. Do the following;

Install the OS without your product key, it won't work at this stage anyway.

Once installed open registry editor, navigate to the following key;

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/]

Edit the "MediaBootInstall" key from 1, to 0.

Open an elevate commad prompt, type command 'smgr -rearm'.

Reboot computer.

Go insert your product key again under computer properties, and activate.

Bob's your uncle, Fanny's your aunt, Windows is working.

the reg edit works best however you can also just install it twice as well...yes you can upgrade an upgrade it takes longer and the reg is the best way just don't forget to reboot before you activate I have had some issues if you skip that step.

I found the twice install method to work the best for me as did the reg trick myself it worked fine then all of a sudden it said I needed to activate but with the twice install method not had that happen and had this same install for over a year now.

How to cheat. install Windows 7 in trial mode. Install you Windows 7 Upgrade over the top... activate delete the Windows.old folder in C:\ so you dont have to look at it... and Done Genuine Copy Win7... Microsoft Are idiots... and yes this does actually work... i personally have used this trick on may atime.

So due to this I've finally been able to active windows so thanks ^^, I'm kinda lazy and they didnt bother me enough to do something about it..

However I do want to add that 'smgr -rearm' didnt work for me, I found 'slmgr -rearm' did work for me, I know little for this and just googled it and came up with slmgr instead of smgr.. Wether it's a typo or just different for different versions I have no clue... Just felt like i should mention it
