Optimal Screen Size for 1440p

As of right now i have two 24inch 1080p ASUS monitors and they are wonderful, but they are getting old. As is my computer (which i built 2 years ago). With the release of several new GPUs, I am itching to upgrade.

I am thinking of upgrading my current 670 (yeah, I am a bit behind) with the r9 390 or 390X 8GB cards. I have read that the 290X performs equally as well (at 1440p) as the 970 and assuming the 300 series is an upgrade, my expectations for it to perform well at that resolution is just (right?).

Anyway, back to the question at hand and enough prefacing. What is the optimum screen size for a 1440p resolution? I really want to upgrade my current monitor setup, but I want to be sure to make the right decision. I don't want to have bought a 32 inch monitor only to realize that 27 inches is perfect.

Anyway, I appreciate any and all responses!

Thanks!

IF all else is equal then bigger is better. If you had a 32" you might use it more like a TV so it's more versatile in that way.

BUT 32" money will get you 27" 144hz... Things are never equal/

IMO, for normal viewing distances I think 27" is perfect on a 1440p display.

Not really. It is about pixel density. A 640X480 image stretched to a 100" display would look awful.

2560X1440 over 27" is a good balance. The pixel density is right so it looks good yet everything isn't so tiny you can't read it without scaling.

This, a high pixel density is great.

I picked up one of these and absolutely love it for my setup. 1440 on a 25" screen is amazingly crisp!

I would go for a decent size monitor, diminishing returns effects for each square space of screen and you would be shifting the marginal cost curve to the right for a bigger screen.

PPI and Pixel Pitch are what you're looking for. I believe the sweet spot is @ 27"

Here you can view the most talked about monitors and their specs including PPI and Pixel Pitch

27 inch is the commonly thought perfect size for 1440p. The pixel per inch count is great at this size and res, as so that it looks good without scaling, and doesn't really need any scaling.

if you sit close to your monitor smaller is better, 25 inch 1440p screens are a thing and I would go that route, the farther away you sit the bigger you should go. here is what I would do

1-3 feet 25 inch
3-5 feet 27 inch
5+ feet 32 inch

I definitely would not even consider a 32 inch within the 3 foot range pixel density isn't good enough.
27 inch 1440p is just fine for close range but the pixel density is going to feel close to 1080p

27" is the way to go for 1440p, it leaves it just over 100ppi which is about right it seems for a desktop display.

Though you should like totally save up and splurge on a 36"+ 4k panel.

Thank you all very much for your responses! It seems that 27" is the way to go. This will help me a lot in deciding what monitor to buy. Thanks!
