I had used opnsense for 4 years in a vm. Switched temporarily to a expensive asus gaming router. I found the unloaded and loaded ping to be better with the asus by 10ms of reduced latency. 12ms vs 25ms unloaded and 18 vs 30 for loaded. I just installed opnwrt to trial it. It seems to give me better network performance in latency, total throughput. It was harder to setup though. I got my wireguard instance and traffic shaping going. It really does seem to be a better router experience minus the firewall rigidity of opnsense.
I think the overhead of the software and extra features are good for enterprise (with opnsense). However, I just do not see the wasted performance using opnsense is worth it. The ASUS router and the openwrt have virtually the same latency for loaded and unloaded.
