Openwrt madness

I usually don't get frustrated with things like this, but I am getting close to losing my mind.

Okay, so I decided to try and build a PirateBox after i had seen that someone i know was riding around with one on his skateboard. So, after buying the right hardware, a TP-Link 703n in my case, I finally sat down and started to work on this project.

The installation of OpenWRT went without a hitch. No problems there. I can telnet into the router just fine while it is in fail-safe mode. I set up a password, and when i went to configure my network settings i started getting a message saying that things such as the DIRECTORY /etc/ ISN'T FOUND. That makes absolutely no sense to me. Nothing else is found either. I ran the command mount_root, and to no avail. I have tried setup of multiple times, with each time ending in me running "firstboot". I have spent about 6hrs looking around online and it seems like i just cant find the answer to my problem. I have read A TON of documentation on the OpenWRT page, as well as multiple forum posts over there.

I am using a TP-Link 703n if that helps any. The router wont start up unless I put it in fail-safe mode, and I CAN telnet into the router, but when i try to SSH into it it gives me a "connection refused" error. Also, I am using Winblows 8 at the moment, but i DO have Linux mint 17 dual booted on this PC. I have tried doing this from Linux, and i cant even telnet into the router when i try in Linux. If you need anymore information, please, let me know and I will try to give it to you.

It could be something very easy to fix, or it could be that I am missing a step, or that I am doing something wrong. Router firmwares are VERY VERY VERY new territory to me.

Please, if anyone here has experience with this, I would be grateful of any help.

Thanks in advance.
