I have been using OpenWRT for a while but in the last year or so I have been using it extensively. It is crazy how powerful it is. It exposes everything and you can configure it to do just about anything.
I especially like there implementations of 802.11r (roaming) and 802.11s (mesh). I like the roaming implementation as I can do fast roaming with no central controller. You can combine this with a mesh network to create a DIY mesh system.
OpenWRT also has good support for vlans so network segmentation is easy.
I love OpenWRT

someone has been chugging the kool-aid again…
don’t get me wrong, I agree with everything you wrote. I started compiling my own builds and haven’t looked back. It’s a great open source project.
I used to use dd-wrt because they had more compatibility due to proprietary drivers or something, but if you start with the right hardware, openwrt is open and much more flexible. All my wifi routers have a serial connection on them because who doesn’t love RS-232/TIA-232, amirite?
FYI - there is a wifi bug in 23.05.4 that slows down 2.4Ghz wifi speeds. They will probably fix it soon, or you can patch it yourself if you homebrew your own builds.

While I can’t say I have experienced this however I would suggest either switching to 22 or downgrading. I don’t think 23.5.3 has any critical security issues so using it for the time being shouldn’t be a problem.
Good luck
