OpenSuse - locks up on clean install using KDE

Well I took the first step into going to Linux and I have to say so far I am not impressed.

I tried Ubuntu on a ram disk awhile back and it worked fine, but OpenSuze leap 42.1 is reminiscent of Windows 95.

First off I did an install with Gnome and the sound wouldn't work. I am using the HDMI port on my gtx 780.

I needed to reinstall so switched to kde, and I can't run any programs other than firefox without the system freezing and locking up. It does this when I run Yast, or other system settings related stuff. Does this also trying to play music. It is a completely clean install with only 1 update added in. I can't even install the nvidia drivers without it freezing. Classic Windows 95 stuff.

Any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

Thanks.

Are you using a LiveUSb or is it installed ? Have you tried the sound settings, It should have an option for you to choose between your GPU or onboard audio

Also, Why did you choose OpenSuse? Linux Mint comes much more "out the box" ready than many distro's out there and come in several flavors(Gnome KDE XFCE etc) I'm not discouraging you from OpenSuse but Mint is a much more seamless install with drivers etc...

I can't change sound settings without freezing.

It was recommended that I give opensuse a try, since I am completely noob with Linux.

Ultimately I will be getting a new machine and running Windows 10 in a VM for gaming.

Do you have Nvidia drivers installed?

I never saw OpenSuse as a total beginners Distro, more of a Step 2 from a completely noob distro... But maybe you can ask those who recommended it to you

I don't have them installed since it crashes when I try to install them.

I am going to switch to Fedora KDE, since it seems it is a bug with Opensuse working under KDE.

Linux mint has an older Kernel version for what I will be trying to do with Kvm and putting Win 10 in the Phantom Zone.

Try Manjora Arch linux KDE. https://manjaro.github.io/

I currently run Fedora 23 Gnome (on it right now) The Nvidia driver install can be a bear, but It's a smooth running experience.

Thanks. I will give that a try later on. Many have said (Wendell included) that Arch may not be so great an experience going in with no knowledge of Linux.

Well I would be fine with a hurdle that can be dealt with lol. Freezes on a fresh install though.....I had my fill in the late 90s...

I've always said, The Ubuntu based distro's ( L/K/X/Ubuntu, Deepin, Linux Mint etc) are very easily the most out of the box distros. The next step after you get your feet wet are, Fedora/ OpenSuse/ etc, the high level are the Arch based distros, Antegros, Architect etc

Thanks I will keep that in mind. Sad thing is: I haven't even got to legitimately beat my head against the wall yet! Turns out Fedora KDE also froze. In fact it would freeze on load therefore I wouldn't be able to fix it even if I were a wizard with the console...

From what I am seeing online it seems kde is buggy as shit for some people. I reinstalled Opensuze gnome and it worked fine. I am disliking gnome though, so I am trying Fedora Cinnamon next.

KDE plasma 5 is still pretty damn buggy.

I would highly suggest you use cinnamon as an alternative.

I also would stay away from fedora. Its nice, but its probably the most annoying distro to use.

Everything is made difficult because fedora only wants to use free software. Spins of fedora were made to combat this issue like korora and a few others, but ultimately I find it to be an obnoxious distros in the linux world IMO.

If you want something reliable and reasonably up to date, try linux mint debian edition.

Its using the cinnamon desktop on a fairly up to date debian core.

Yup... It was my first install, Fedora KDE, but I went with Gnome instead and all my machines work flawlessly

Did you update your install on Opensuse? Are you using multi monitor?

I did update it and was technically using multi monitor using sound via HDMI. I switched over to an optical audio connection but still had issues with freezing.

Either way I am on Fedora Cinnamon and all setup and running fine now :)

I run Opensuse DID on three different machine with three different GPUS.

It may be the resume software option. KDE has an option the srttingssetting to resume any software that was running when you turned off the machine. Most likely source of your issues.

That is a new one that I haven't read about yet. However in both fresh installs of OpenSuse kde, and Fedora kde they both crashed upon running software for the first time. Sound (settings) or Yast. Essentially within 30 seconds of first boot. Actually Fedora kde didn't even load all of the way the first two times before freezing. It didn't make it to desktop.

It must be a hardware/driver compatibility issue, but I have a 3570k, Asus P8Z77-v lk, and 16GB Kingston ram. Each piece should be among the most common pieces of hardware for their types.
