I’ve got an unRAID server where I host my Plex server, a bunch of network shares, and a couple of VMs. I’ve been working on setting up a Linux VM with GPU passthrough the last couple of days with nonstop issues. I have openSUSE LEAP 42.3 running in the VM, and I have passed it my 650TI and all is well as far as that goes.
But my audio is being very difficult. And I think it may be causing my video to be messed up too. I can’t watch Youtube videos. They take about 15 seconds to stutter through the first second of video and audio, and then they just halt altogether and won’t continue usually. Same with Vimeo, and Soundcloud behaves similarly.
Video games seem ok, but the is again stuttering and jittery and stretched WAY out. The one game that didn’t work well was Audiosurf 2, and the entire game runs fine, but the tracks go by incredibly slowly, and I think its due to the sound not keeping up so the game is making sure the track stays in sync with the song.
I can stream games through Steam In-Home streaming just fine, but with garbage audio. Video works great though.
I can play local media, again, with video being fine but garbage audio. In the Pulse Audio control panel I can see the level meter spike up tiny bits here and there in sync with the tiny snippets of sound I get. In the YAST control panel I configured the built in sound device on the GPU with the quick setup, and I have tried toggling some of the advanced settings there, but that’s all beyond me. The only one I’m familiar with is the MSI interrupts one which doesn’t change anything turned on or off.
I have no idea what’s going on, but I think my video issues are connected to the sound issue. Any ideas what the heck is going on with my sound?
Sorry for the huge info dump, I just wanted to provide all the info I could from my testing. Let me know if you need to know more!
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: OK, new information has been found. If I boot the VM without any audio device attached, including without the GPU audio PCI device, everything runs buttery smooth, just no audio. So this gave me an idea, I put in my cheapo USB sound card, and passed it to the VM, and audio AND video work perfectly with it. So it’s just something weird about the built in GPU audio. I’ve tried it with my 650TI now, my 1080, and my friend has had the same experience as me with his 750TI. Something about the Nvidia onboard audio.
Any ideas?
