OpenMediaVault with ZFS

I was watching the RAID: Obsolete? videos and now I understand the positives behind ZFS. I was planning on building an OpenMediaVault machine because of the plugin support and because it looks easy to understand. Wendell said that he likes the idea of OMV but he does not want to give up ZFS thus he uses freeNAS.

I found a guide that shows how to install ZFS in OMV here on the OMV forums and I found this write up describing that there is not much of a difference between ZFS and ZFS on Linux anymore and it is stable. Would it be alright to use OMV with ZFS as an alternative to freeNAS?

why would you go OMV vs FreeNAS?

just curious

I have seen a couple videos comparing them both and OMV seems to be easier to use and get started, it also has a heap of plugins that can be installed like btsync, openvpn, transmission, plex, subsonic, virtualbox, owncloud.. I don't know if these are in FreeNAS.

All are those plugins are in FreeNAS. ZFS is in the BSD kernel but not in the Linux kernel so there is that.

I am a very Large Linux fan but BSD does ZFS better. If you only need raid 1 or 10 BTRFS would work better than ZFS for Linux.

You could use OMV with ZFS just don't expect it to be fully stable and reliable.

Personally I don't recommend running Web Apps on the Same Machine as a NAS just because your fault tolerance goes down and increases the chance of security breaches. Unless you can run the services in a VM or container I would use separate machines.
