Open VPN & UFW (SOLVED)

While updating Mint 16 last night, I noticed that my Open VPN would not connect (vpn connection attempt timed out error), so I attempted to set up another server in a different country but I got the same results.

I then realised that UFW was blocking the VPN so I disabled the firewall and voila I have my VPN back, but here's my problem, being a total n00b when it comes to Linux is there any way to set exceptions in the firewall to allow the VPN to function as designed? and with a VPN is a firewall even necessary?, would the connection server have their own firewall?.

Kind Regards

ufw is not a firewall, it's a firewall configuration tool

if you're using ufw, something must be very wrong, because that still uses iptables

we're using netfilter now and firewalld on a little older distros, all dynamic, iptables is static

you would have no problem with VPN on a dynamic firewall at all

should be a non-issue

Yeah it was my fault, rookie mistake. I was following a guide on what to do after installing Mint and basically was blocking incoming and outgoing ports, I've now crossed over to Sabayon but the VPN is still having connectivity issues as it will work fine for a few hours then time out and lose connection, but this is all part of the learning process.

Plus I'm rather enjoying actually being able to get my hands dirty and set things to how I want my PC setup, not having something hold my hand through everything
