Open Cl 1.2?

Am i correct in assuming that Open Cl 1.2 wil help when using a photo editor like DxO optics Pro 9.

It say's in the tec description that it uttilises Open Cl. If so what am i to expect from it. Am about to go for a

Club 3d Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition. No i'm not a gamer so the gaming qualities don't matter for me, its mainly for photo editing and Hi res video streaming, i see its 4K ready so that's like a future bonus.

Greatings,

Eric.

From their website:

"Information about OpenCL - If you have a compatible graphics card, OpenCL improves the preview and batch-processing performance particularly for the RAW conversion and noise reduction processes."

So it's impact may be relatively limited, unless you often process many RAW files at a time doing batch conversions of files. Otherwise you can bet that the program will largely be CPU bound. Make sure you have a fast CPU first. Second most important is fast storage for the files you're working with, preferably an SSD.

Anyway it's a good idea to look for a model of graphics card that comes with 2GB of graphics memory, just in case you're editing huge files with many layers or such that can use a lot of memory. I am not experienced with DxO Optics Pro, but other software that can make use of the the graphics card hardware like Photoshop or even FastPictureViewer can quickly fill up 1GB graphics memory. The difference in price should not be huge nowadays.

Edit: If you're looking at cards in the range of the HD7770, consider its newer brothers the HD7790 or R7 260X. They are based on a newer model chip that have both somewhat better compute/OpenCL performance and slightly more modern overall features.

Hope any of this helped you more than added confusion. ;)

Thanks mkk.

It wil be mainly for raw conversion and DXO optics has a briljant noise reduction program, thats does quite  a number on the cpu/gpu combo. Its painstakkingly slow on my core 2duo. So my new 8350 based system wil be miles ahead to start with. But thanks for your advise, and for 20 uero's more a r7 260x is a good alternative.

Greetz,

Eric.
