Online Gaming @ College

Hi.  I want to know if (I'm sure there is) there is a way to play online games while I'm logged into the school network.

What can I do?

I can't access Steam, my Minecraft server, LoL, basically anything.

EXTRA INFO.

  • To get internet access on this network, you MUST log in with your student email and password, even if you're using a portable device.
  • There's an "open network" that once connected will redirect you to the log in page, if you haven't already saved your info.
  • There's another network with a similar name but you need a key just to even get connected.
  • Small School. few thousand students.  Tons of computers.

do what I do at my college, plug your computer into the ethernet. Plus the wired connection will be much faster than the wifi.

I'll try that.  But I'm not sure it would work. I say that because I've tried connecting to games through the desktops they have here. I assume I'd still be blocked. But I'll give it a shot.

as long as you are on your own computer I think it should be fine unless your school has some fascist network blocks.

You need to tunnel your traffic. Be it through a socks proxy or a VPN. Not something I managed to work out at my school. Look at it and have a play around but it could be that their blocking any non web based protocols or setting up a temp proxy through the browser that only the browser can access. Best way to check is by smart phone I think. Connect to the network and log in and then try going through the app store and download something. If you can then you should be able to tunnel your traffic if not well If it was me I would be looking at finding a new way to get my traffic through the network but thats my methology and im far from someone with reputable knowledge on the subject.

Thank you very much for your input! I will take all of this into consideration when tinkering around with the network!

lol

"Overly secure networks are so fascist it makes me sick!"

talk to your technology department too. they may be able to provide you insight as to why they are blocking things. it could also be a bad configuration.

I question why you need to game on the network anyway. Most schools including uni's and college's force you to sign a legal binding contract that makes it clear that you can not use the network for content like gaming, pornography and other such joyous topics. People have in the past got themselves into big trouble by breaching such contracts and well. Self explaining.

However if you ask any "hacker" they will tell you that the best way to "Hack" is through social engineering. If your desperate to gain access to your games through the network, Social engineer the admin.

Nice! Honestly didn't think of that! haha
Hopefully the lady is as nice as the librarian.

Wow, and I thought my uni was bad for just blocking p2p...

Anyway try a vpn that would be the best place to start.

how did all this go over OP? things get unblocked or just more blocks get put up? or you get thrown out?
