Hello,
I think it is time to upgrade my old LGA1556 core i5 760 platform. I will be purchasing the FX-8320. I haven't tried AMD before so this will be exiting for me.
The ram I am using:

The only thing I want from a motherboard is stability as I had horrible experience with motherboards before when running an overclocked system for more than a day. Things always start to act weird and then crash except for an entry level gigabyte(GA-EP45-UD3R).
I will be doing my own research of course, I just want the opinions of the experienced people in the AMD world.
Thanks.
I forget to mention that the motherboard has to have easy compatibility with linux.
AM3+ board that i would personaly recommend for overclocking the shit out of a FX cpu:
- Asus crosshair V Formula Z 8+2 powerphase digi vrm, shielded audio, intel lan.
- Asrock 990FX Extreme 9 12+2 powerphase digi vrm, intel lan
- Asus 990FX Sabertooth R2.0 8+2 powerphase digi vrm, realtek lan
- Asus M5A99FX pro R2.0 6+2 powerphase digi vrm, realtek lan
These are the best AM3+ boards in my opinnion, especialy the Crosshair and the Extreme 9 offcourse. These are my 2 favorites, because they overclock very well, and both have intel lan, which i personaly prefer over realtek.
Sabertooth, this board is also a rock sollid overclocker, the reason why i put this board on the third place under the Asrock Extreme 9, is because the it has a realtek lan.
Further i would ask you the question, what you budget is for a cpu + mobo upgrade, and which games you are playing mostly?
Because if you play allot of cpu bound games like MMO´s, then i would recommend to concider an i5-4690K with Z97 mobo, if you can afford, depending on your current GPU.
Asrock has the most complaints i have seen about no linux support with asus coming in a distance second.
The only game I play is CS:GO which doesn't require much, and even then I will be playing it on low settings because I get more visibility when playing competitively. maxing out games is not a goal of mine.
The reason I am upgrading is that I want the features of a new motherboard that I am missing like UEFI BIOS, SATA 3 and USB3. Plus, The motherboard I am currently On is an unstable piece of crap.
I want to move to AMD because I haven't played with their processors and I want to know what they are like compared to Intel. Price is not much of an issue. I considered moving to X99, but then it would be a waste since I will never use that much computing power. I want to experience what I can do with 8 physical cores on a Linux system, running all my multi-threaded code that I wrote and experimenting.
I might go with the FX-8350, I saw on amazon for $129 then it went back to $150.
I am considering the Asus 990FX Sabertooth R2.0. It is the newest board I saw, it even has PCIe 3.0 ( I know I don't need it). I know the TUF series board are tested more than other, which contribute to stability when running the system for long period of time. I just have to research linux compatibility and make sure every thing is OK.
The Sabertooth R2.0 does not have pci-e 3.0 only 2.0. There was a Sabertooth GEN 3 limited edition with a simulated pci-e 3.0 slot. But Vishera cpu´s simply dont support pci-e 3.0.
Those GEN3 boards where limited and not for sale anymore. Pci-e 3.0 vs 2.0 doesnt make any sense furter.
On the topic of PCIe 2.0 vs. PCIe 3.0, there is a very, very negligible difference between the two. Most benchmarks I've seen are roughly 2-4 FPS different between PCIe 2.0 and 3.0, going both ways. And those are benchmarks with things like Titans, GTX 690s, and other high end cards.
been using the Asus M5A99FX pro R2.0 since March on a 9590 with a h100i on it, running a 270x and 2133 mhz ram, had no issues with it so far at all, she runs very stable at 5 Ghz when gaming, if you want to save a few bucks over the other boards and you don't care about blue heatsinks, it's a decent board for the cost if you get it on sale.
