On board GPU for 1440P out via Displayport

Hi All,
I have a Thinkpad X61. Its nice, but I’d like to use a laptop hooked up to my 1440P display via Displayport. I know a lot of laptop GPUs can output at the required res, but outputing and being smooth is another thing. I plan on running Linux Mint. As I do now on the Thinkpad X61.

I plan on normal stuff, browsing, music, youtube and some light gaming on a par with Stardew Valley. I’m currently erring toward a Thinkpad W520 with a Nvidia Quadro K2000. Mainly as this supports Optimus. I can get one for £400.

I like IPS screens as well. I don’t want another TN display.

if you plan on using linux then stay as far away from optimus as possible. the support is sub-par at best

At that stay away from mint. It uses a now ancient kernel for the sake of LTS. Either use ubuntu 16.04, the newest of LTS, or maybe a rolling release OS like Netrunner Rolling (I shill for them where I can :P). Reason I say that is I would want the newest kernel possible for this sorta thing. Ancient kernel = ancient drivers.

Thanks for the info both of you. I think I will have to try out some other distro's first. Or stick to just general use.
Cheers
