Old Server ram for even older OEM PC

Hi Guys!,

Quick hardware question! I have bunch of old HP Compaq 6200 with intel G620 in it. I need to refurbish them and bring them back to life. They are gonna be used just for browsing and light office work. I wan to upgrade ram and reinstall system and so happens to be i have some spare DDR3 ECC ram from server upgrade. Can i use it in those PC's ?

Cheers,

Pobs

PS Sorry if category is incorrect

Pretty sure you can not.

I was sure the error correcting feature will not work but just wasn't sure if the pins are different or voltages or something else (pretty bad at hardware) so i thought i would ask. Didn't want to put it in and blow anything.

If it is unbuffered ECC memory, it probably just wouldn't boot.
If it is registered it is actually electrically different.

I don't think the G620 can handle ECC, I also don't think the chipset/board of those machines could.

I thought compatible RAM was going to be very expensive but this isn't too much. The motherboard can fit up to 4x 8GB = 32GB DDR3.
