Old (quite old) laptop batteries

I have a box of laptop batteries (Lenovo/ThinkPad) that haven’t been powered/charged for 13 years at least. Are these still stable enough to just keep on a shelf with other equipment, etc? None of them seem to be leaking or swelling, I’m just concerned if they’ll start behaving like those old Varta batteries that trash vintage computers. Some equipment can just go inert, some break down in unpleasant ways (it’s like that roll of nitrate-based movie film I keep in the freezer until I can find someplace to safely donate it to)

I would just recycle them all. No need to run the risk.

Just recycle them. I don’t know where you live, but if you live near a batteries plus they will take old batteries. Most cities have a location you can take and drop off old electronics and batteries.

Do you still use the laptops they are compatible with?

Is there a reason not to take them to the municipal waste to remove the risk at home?

If it is just inertia/lack of enthusiasm to scrap them, but they have popped back in to your mind, then make a plan RIGHT NOW and make a date to get rid of them.

Don’t procrastinate, else it’ll be another 13 years.

It’s on your mind now, take 10 minutes to google the local waste plant, see if you need to book a slot, and go as soon as you can, and it’s done.

They might last another 13 years and never leak/burst, but if you aren’t using them now, you won’t be then, either…

High time for another contribution to the “circular economy:wink:

Just one, a ThinkPad T23. I haven’t seen a T40-series or T60-series laptop in ages.

Around here (Mid-Hudson Valley) they charge you lots for any e-waste. And they don’t let you pick through what’s there. I don’t get by any other electronics places since I’ve been out of work for 15 months.

Hmm, I guess we are lucky that some of our crazy taxes, go towards municipal waste places, and battery selling shops, must take the batteries they sell.

Sorry bud, and hope the job market picks up soon… :frowning:
