Old external hard drive incompatibility

I just built my very first DIY pc with windows 8.1  I have a old out of warranty Iomega prestige portable external 1tb hard drive that was made to run on xp,vista and 7  that i used for back up on my old vista that passed away  !tried my moms old vista just to make sure it still works! it runs great ! Ive tried different compatibility in the trouble shooter with no luck called lenovo no help !?  it appears to be running in the back ground processes in the task manager and in devices and drives comes up as cd drive (g:) iomega 0 bytes free of 81.1MB   CDFS i cant install run or double click can open  and then try but a error pops up and says . Cannot overwrite IOU/test.com because it is currently in use ! This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action please install a program lol yet it wont let me install the encryption desktop icon program thats built in to the hard drive  to do anything ! not sure what to do still learning windows 8.1 or where to look ? sorry for the long help rant but ive never had a problem like this and didnt want to leave anything out !  Thanks for any idea's help

If it were my HHD, i'd rip it out of the case and plug it into the mobo via sata. 99/100, it will solve your problem, since it seems to be driver related.

it works fine on vista tho ? just need to find out why windows 8.1 is not installing the encryption driver/installation program  that's built into the external hard drive on to 8.1 to unlock the external hard drive so it shows up on my only current working windows 8.1 ? Thanks for the idea !

One thing you might try is to make win 8.1 install a driver that it does not deem safe:

http://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how-to-disable-driver-signature-verification-on-64-bit-windows-8.1-so-that-you-can-install-unsigned-drivers/

We both know those drivers are safe, it's just that 8.1 won't install them because they're 'not on the list'.

Try the procedure in the link and it might solve your problem without getting your screwdriver out!

I finally figured it out and found a somewhat of a newer driver for windows 8 nothing for 8.1, that they no longer support lenovo bought out iomega i guess !. but had to to do a few things to make it work ! Thank You for the help ive learned allot more in the last few days !
