not sure if this should be in linux or is this fine
it has a intel pentium M 0.13 um tech 1 core with 2gb ddr (yes ddr not ddr2 or 3)
with a nvidia quadro fx go700 with a 111gb hdd
what linux can this run and its got xp on it so i dont want it to get viruses my moms going to be using it
bump
It probably can. Try running xububtu.
That pentium is a single core 1,4GHz from 2003, I don't think it'll run xubuntu very well. I'd try out puppy linux or lubuntu (or some other distro variant with LXDE as the desktop environment).
k cheers im downloading it at the moment hopefully itll work when you run it from the usb do you see the same performance that you would get with it installed?
The only difference in performance between running it from USB and the HDD is the loading time when it boots up, opening a program and such, basically tasks where it has to get stuff from long term memory. As soon as you've got a program opened, it lies in RAM and is therefore independent of where the operating system is. So just boot up, open a browser and navigate to youtube. It's a quite heavy site, if it'll run that it'll run pretty much any website. Browsing the web is probably the most heavy task your mum is going to do with it.
yeah true and shes going to be doing some document work which should beable to sufficied by libreoffice
Which OS are you trying out? Just FYI puppy linux is the most light weight distro of the two I recommended.
It may struggle with puppy linux. i have an old businesses laptop from the Core 2 Duo or probably even earlier (it says Centrino on sticker) that has puppy linux and have noticed some little slowdown from time. I don't use that laptop very much but i occasionally go on it and do some browsing on it.
yeah im trying puppy linux
Yeah one thing is running the OS, another is doing modern tasks, like browsing the web. The easy part is definitely the OS when we're dealing with distros such as puppy.
I managed to load and run Ubuntu on a 1200MHz Mobile Athlon 4 and that worked fine. So Xubuntu or Lubuntu should be fine.
That's the beauty of linux. You can just try it out and see if it works :)
true ive got puppy linux running on it from my usb stick gonna get firfox installed then take it to my mum and see if she likes how it looks :D
ive got all the partitions set up but the guide i was following was using a cd to live boot it and im using a usb so i have to find a few files but i dont know where they are
Hmm, are you retrieving files from the USB? Might be able to help you out if you link the guide. Also, why not follow a guide meant for a USB? Although I can't imagine them to be vastly different.
ive tried to find one for usb but all they talk about are cd no usb
you can use the cd version and just burn it onto usb by using Pen Drive Linux.
trying that now
This will probably work, I have it installed on older hardware than that.
