Old AMD 6 core vs new 6 core chip

I finally got around to replacing my FX 6300 with a Ryzen 5 1600, so I thought I'd run some tests and add something helpful to this forum that I usually just lurk on. All the parts stayed the same besides the ones listed; so 850w power supply, be quiet! 600 (old version) case, 500gb crucial M500, and a R9 290x. Yes the giant orange Sapphire one.

Old Rig: FX-6300 - Stock clocked
8gb 1600 DDR3
CM Hyper 212 Evo with fan replaced by be quiet! silent wings 2

New Rig: Ryzen 5 1600 - stock clocked
8gb 3000 DDR4 (Running at 2667  )
Stock cooler

Benchmarks: All at 1440P

  1. AMD Overdrive: FX - 10194 ----- Ryzen - N/A*

  2. Arma 3 Y.A.A.B. Benchmark: FX: 20FPS ------ Ryzen: 32.6FPS
Optimised Settings, the benchmark is grueling.

  3. Metro Last Light Redux Benchmark: FX P1: 30.7FPS, P2: 79.8FPS ----- Ryzen P1: 30FPS, P2: 70.1FPS**
P1: Everything maxed, P2: Everything maxed with SSAO and Tessellation off.
  4. Passmark: FX: 2796.9, 67th percentile ----- Ryzen: 4333.5, 87th percentile

  5. 7-zip 128mb: FX: 15503 ----- Ryzen: 22339

  6. Time Spy: FX CPU Score: 2141 ----- Ryzen CPU Score: 5516

  7. Fire Strike: FX: 7921 ----- Ryzen: 10894

*AMD OD caused constant bluescreen after swapping processors with a AODDriver2.sys error. Very annoying.
**While it seems the 1600 performed worse looking at the frame graph afterwards resulted in a much tighter grouping. I suspect the stock cooler is blowing hot air onto the GPU, causing throttling earlier than with the 212 evo.

On a closing note DDR4 teething pains are real on AM4. On latest BIOS (1.30) for a MSI b350 tomahawk I couldn't get my Corsair Vengence LPX 3000 kit above 2667. I've jumped my CMOS today more than I have in the 6 years of owning the FX system. Also I'm terrible at formatting. Hope this helps someone considering a jump from FX to Ryzen 5.

Good share.

Thank you! I'll try to remember to update this whenever AMD OD is working properly.

Well memory speeds of 2667mhz is probably fine for your particular gaming situation.
On 1440P with a 290X, the memory speed will probably have a very minor impact,
on overall gaming performance.

The radial fins are probably the culprit. Although, if you have decent exhaust fans, most of that heat should go out of the case instead of being recycled.

Use markdown or bbc for formatting blog posts. Discord does not fully support markdown so tables do not work but it does support embedding images using the little upload tool as a lazy workaround.
