So for the past while I’ve been getting really weird packet loss? request timeouts?, I tend to always have a cmd ping test running while I’m gaming. I like to see if I’m having a connection issue or its just bad servers. Well recently I’ve been getting random request time outs on ping tests, it tends to be even worse on wifi, but that might just be due to congestion as i live in an apartment building(changing channels helped some). 6ghz tends to completely shit the bed eventually and my devices will eventually disconnect from it. However it still happens on hardwire sometimes, the really strange thing is, if i run 3 different ping tests, 1 to cloudflare, another to google and the last one to opendns they will request time out at completely different times, but they will all eventually give a request time out. Ontop of that is the request time outs wont always line up with the ping test vs. the game. Then even more strangely, the request time out to each ip will also happen at a completely different time on a different system, like my vm running from my unraid server and my main pc. My ping times have also been higher than they historically have been. I used to get pretty steady 8-12ms, but as you can see in the screenshot it goes from 8ms to mid 20s. Running a pingtest inside the router gives similar ping times, however it never gives “Request Timed out” or show any packet loss at the end of the test.
I was on my own arris modem, but when comcast upgraded to the newer version of docsis and offered higher upload speeds I jumped on it. I got sick of paying $30 a month extra just to have my own modem and I would have to get a newer modem anyway as mine only had a 1gb port and I upgraded to 2200 down/300 up, so I got their modem instead of buying a new one. The problem persists, so I know its not the modem. I’ve tried replacing the coax cable indoors and ethernet cables to devices. I wanted to kind of get some opinions before I go calling comcast or assuming my router is bad, because comcast techs tend to be pretty useless unless you get someone higher up, which is hard to do. Could this be comcasts infrastructure being overtaxed due to the higher bandwidth they upgraded in the area? Because it seems to have started around the time they started upgrading the area. Is my router the culprit? It was a launch model, I bought it on release. It has the most recent firmware update. I might have to pop in my old router or run the xfi modem in router mode temporarily to see if the problem persists, It’s just a pain because I have smart devices and a server that needs some open ports, so setting those up again is a pain.
Modem: Comcast xFi Advanced Gateway (XB8)
