Obsolete Firewall Hardware - pfsense install exploration

As many of us in the IT sector know, planned obsolescence has got some of our work/home space cluttered with old hardware.
I have been “collecting” much of this hardware as it seems a waste to let something that has a Software provider “Locked” firmware that only through purchasing of Services and Licensing of that brand will allow, and parts there of, access and use.

To cut a rant short, I have an old TZ300 which I would like to port pfsense to.
I don’t have the equipment like JTAG or UART but I do have Arduino’s…
My thoughts on to approach this:
-Reset to factory
-use the backup to download firmware
-reverse engineer to allow pfsense install

Unfortunately, work is being a time leech at the moment but I would like to know if anyone else is working along these lines.
