It looks like nVidia might have taken note of AMD's master plan. Seeing as how AMD basically has the tech working already with Zen/Threadripper/Naples/Epyc, I am hoping that they will manage to get their version out before nVidia, but it seems that Navi isn't expected in 2018. Either one could be first to market with a true multi chip module gpu. Vega is said to be the first gpu with infinity fabric, so maybe in 2018 we won't see Navi, but we will see an MCM vega gpu released. Only time will tell with these things.
It's Nvidia, though. So I wouldn't be surprised if their version is half-assed and overhyped.
Doesn't this tech require the games/drivers to still be coded to run this well. Dual gpu is still sli in a since just on same board correct?
Maybe for computation it would be great like mining, etc.
There's no dual GPU going on here, but a single GPU made of multiple chips. Graphics cards are massively parallel devices and already have many identical compute units replicated next to one another. The novelty here is just that the compute units would be on different chips as well, while still sharing some components, like presumably the memory controller.
I expect the changes to be mostly transparent to games. As for the drivers, they might have to allocate related tasks to nearby compute units to reduce latency. But that's probably already the case anyway.
The PS4 Pro is essentially also using two regular PS4 GPUs. I'm not sure whether they are on the same chip, but this just goes to show that coordination is possible.
Very nice appreciate the correction
The next step in the Master Plan is crashing this plane with no survivors die-stacking GPUs.
