Non-committal Ping

Hi everyone.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I have never had this happen before. I had issues with my wireless router so I am now I'm getting my connection straight from a modem (wired of course, I have a 20 m long adsl cord going from the filter on the wall to the modem)

I started gaming and everything was fine until i started to notice that my ping was increasing. I would start a game with about a 62 ms ping and it would just continue to rise though out the game. The max I've seen being 624 ms making bf4 unplayable. If i restart the modem the ping drops to 62 ms again but it always climbs back up. Do you guys know what could be causing this? Could packets be getting back logged? Any suggestions on how to fix this would be helpful. Thanks

Note: I am living in New Zealand connecting to Australian servers. (not that it matters I think)

Side note: Watching your videos I'm amazed with the sorts of speed you guys talk about having. With real world internet speeds (not speed tests) here I'm more than happy to get 2 Mb/s down and i don't think I've ever had it 1 Mb/s up. Costs around $105 for 150 gigs and phone a month. Although we don't have any bullshit with internet companies here cos we have so many.

Wait, so you are running straight from a system into a modem? If so you are literally letting everything hit your PC and getting it to filter everything at the NIC. Did this happen at all when using the router you mentioned?

Pssst. This should be in the networking hardware Forum

Yea, pretty sure. It's an on board NIC too. No it didn't but the network connection would crash every few minutes. Buying a new router would fix this problem ahye?

Sorry, I was not sure what was causing this.
