No Z690 chipset Linux drivers? Really?

Looking for a sanity check. I can’t seem to find Linux drivers for my shiny new workhorse Alder Lake based Intel i9-12900K Z690 (MSI MEG TOMAHAWK Z690 DDR4 motherboard) system.

Tried installing the latest kernels, currently on 5.17.5 (latest stable as of today), several different distros, and they all report:

These Intel Corporation Device 7aXX devices are only using the generic linux pciestub driver because drivers don’t exist for the Z690 chipset?

Am I right that the chipset drivers are missing or am I doing something wrong here? It seems too glaring an issue to be missed by all the l33t reviewers and entirely missed by the community for 6 months after the platform’s release? Or maybe I’m not high, I didn’t realize the issue until I tried to use the iGPU’s HDMI audio and discovered the larger problem.

I’ve got to be entirely missing something here. Please tell me how deluded I am and what I’m doing wrong.

have you tried the kernel parameter i915.force_probe=4680?

No, the device descriptions there have nothing to do with drivers. Your pci.ids file is just out-of-date and doesn’t have a matching device ID. Run sudo update-pciids and it should download the latest list of device descriptions.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Ran sudo update-pciids that made a big difference. Still not 100%, no Intel PCH HD Audio controller is showing up like I think it should. Several PCI bridge devices aren’t displaying correctly but they’re binding to the pcieport like the should.

It’s a big improvement, still investigating.

Does anyone know where to look for Intel driver submissions into presumably Kernel 5.18? Not being a kernel dev, it’s a little difficult to navigate the mail lists, etc.

I suspect this is because you’re using discrete graphics. Try connecting your display to the onboard output or pulling your 3080 to verify. Device ID should show up as something between 7ad0-7ad7 in your lspci output regardless of the description.

I have both the iGPU and nvidia dGPU HDMI ports plugged into HDMI1 & HDMI2 inputs on my LG C1 monitor. Audio for both work fine on my old intel 8700K (Z370 chipset) system with exactly the same setup (currently plugged into HDMI3 & HDMI4). Good idea, but I don’t think that’s it.

On old system, PCI device 00:1f.3 is the iGPU HDMI audio device, gets displayed as “ASUSTeK 200 Series HD Audio” and gets bound to snd_hda_intel. On the new system I expect one of these improperly identified generic PCI devices is the audio controller that’s being bound to pcieport.

Could this be a MSI motherboard thing? Interesting the ASUS-specific name on the old system.

INTERESTING: In that device table you reference the chipset audio device is listed as 7AD0, on this system it’s listed as 7AC0. I suspect a typo somewhere along the line. Any suggestions for how to track this down? I’m a little out of my depth here.

I just updated to kernel 5.18.8 (ubuntu 22.04) and still no support for the intel z690 audio controller, at least not for this motherboard.

lspci -k shows the same pcie ports bound to the pcieport stub driver. :sob:

At this point, I’m losing hope it’ll ever be supported. Can anyone suggest anything to try to get the device working?

This motherboard has a Realtek® ALC4080 Codec as it is written in the specification on their website. So it has nothing to do with Z690 chipset. You may check if this hardware is supported or the proper kernel module is loaded.
