So when I go to uni in a couple of weeks I'll be on a single Ethernet connection. This wouldn't be a problem if I were only using my desktop however I'd also like to use my tablet, phone and laptop (surface pro - no Ethernet). Consequently I need to find something to convert Ethernet to wifi. What do I realistically need to do this? Any help would be appreciated. I've checked through my accommodation contract and any agreements and there has been no mention of using hardware to do so. Very little mention of the internet connection at all in fact.
No need for any special shit, just get a cheap router like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-JWNR2010-Wireless-External-Antenna/dp/B00HEKKB0I/
Yup. A Wireless Access Point might work as well, but a router will be more useful if you decide to move out of halls at some point. A Wireless Router can generally do anything a Wireless Access Point can do and more.
While a router/access point may be a good solution, some Universities do not allow residents to bring in their own wireless networking equipment. I know mine didn't. You could use the wired connection available in the the dorm but you couldn't bring your own access point or splitter. You had to use that or the university's wireless connection (Which thankfully was a 150 Mbps symmetric connection).
my uni is like that as well. they do allow wired things like switches and hubs, but you cant use a router or a wireless ap. your uni wireless is damn fast at 150 symmetric. ours is like 20-50 depending on where you are on campus. also OP, check with the IT guys first. just because housing agreement doesnt say anything about it, doesnt mean the network access agreement wont have something in it. definitely make sure all your ducks are in a row before you go popping up access points
man just think about the amount of data a bunch of collage kids could use. Its probably more then most carriers could handle. I was happy with cable internet 10 years ago. collage kids should start demanding fiber handoffs in dorm rooms.
at my uni, the dorms have ethernet jacks ran to each room. i am in family housing so all we have is crummy old phone line. which is useless for me
