No post after windows logo

So I just swapped mobos and I did a clean install of windows 7. Evereything seems good after the install, updated OS, install drivers and restarted the PC.

So this is where I start getting issues, as win is booting I got to the windows logo and then the monitor went to sleep. Now I did hear the windows login theme, so I know that it booted into windows.
Hmm, I wondered, turned the machine off and tried again, same problem. Booted the machine into safe mode, everything worked.

Uninstalled the GPU drivers and reboot. This time it booted fine, so decided to reinstall the GPU drivers and restart. Bam back to square one no post after the windows logo.

As I did a clean install I had a ton of updates to install, so decided to allow it to install them and once it finished I restarted. Bam back to the same problem, gets to windows logo and then monitor turns itself off.

Again I can get into safe mode, uninstall the nVidia drivers and it will post properly. Just not when I install the GPU drivers.

Any help would be great, I know I have tried a few things but for the life of me I cannot remember off the top of my head was a long day troubleshooting and stuff yesterday. So if you suggest something I'll let you know if I have tried it.

Windows 7, MOBO: z77a-GD65 CPU: i5 3570k Ram: 8gb ballistix sport GPU: 780ti HDD: 1TB barracuda PSU: AX860

Try installing a previous version of the GPU drivers. That can often solve issues like this.

Install monitor drivers. This happened to me with one Samsung 4k and one Asus 1440p monitor

Try plugging the monitor in to the on board video port and see if that works. If it does you will need to go and disable the on board video in the BIOS.

after you install the graphics driver, change your ress to 800 x 600, i know its ugly, but just do it till you restart. then change it.

hopefully that will sort it.

That is not the issue. I have checked.

I'll give that a go thanks. I'll let you know how I get on with that.

I tried that didn't work

going to try this, will let you know how that goes.

if you still have your old board, test your gfx card on there and see what happens. if it doesnt, its your new mobo.. though it sounds like your 780ti is faulty, but if it was working before it could be the motherboard but im leaning more to the gfx card..

just as an FYI post isn't the proper term for this issue. POST stands for power on self test and only occurs prior to OS boot and is handled by your motherboard exclusively. This is a post boot issue and is due to drivers.

Are you using displayport and what monitor are you using? Also it might be windows update sometimes when you have to install a few hundred updates at the same time because of a clean install it will screw up, you can install the updates at say 20 at a time and it generally will have no problems.

I know the card is working, I have put it in the 2nd pcie slot and it seems to be working. Don't know why I didn't do that before. I still have to swap it back to the first pcie slot and see if it works there now.

sorry, for some reason i thought you had tried that.. lol. mobo then

Yeah I got that after I wrote this, got lazy and didn't bother to fix it. I put the card in the 2nd pcie slot and it seemed to install drivers for the pcie slot, I think that might have fixed the issue. Still have to test it in the first slot again.

I think it was because I wasn't up for messing around with the inside again after putting it back together and installing windows. I think I just was 'f*** it wouldn't be bothered' kinda attitude.

So here is what I got. The machine is working but the GPU is in the 2nd pcie slot. Still getting problem if I put it in the first slot.

I take it that the board is at fault, my new question is, is it fixable??

It might just be dust or something in the PCIe slot or something shorting out on the back of the motherboard, i would check that first.
Also reseating the cpu might help as it controls the PCIe 3.0 lanes.

i agree with checking the slot for dust, but tbh if the cpu wasnt sat correctly you would have more problems than just the 1st pci-e slot being faulty.. it is more likely to be a board fault, and no it isnt easily fixable at all. if its new, send it back.

It is unlikely but i have seen it fix problems like this in the past and more intermittent issues. I don't mean that its not sat correctly because as you say if that was the case it would not post, i mean a pin might not be making good contact or a piece of something might have gotten in there, yes it is probably a board fault but it is still worth trying.
