Has anyone looked into installing programs without actually installing them? Every program you install makes registry entries and whatnot, and the more stuff you install, your computer starts to get slower. This might be different with an SSD, but I'm not sure. I'm looking at a program called VMware ThinApp that is apparently capable of converting any program to a single .exe file. My plan is to use this on everything possible (including 3ds Max, Unreal Development Kit, etc) on my next computer upgrade (and OS re-installation). Any thoughts on this? Thanks.
Also, I read up on why programs even need to be installed in the first place, and it was something about it being more convenient to have all the windows libraries / dependencies all in once place on the OS for all programs to access universally, instead of each program having to have their own.
I've seen this once before actually, but I don't think I realized it can actually package ANY program. What I'm really wondering is if doing this to any program will cause performance issues, such as 3Ds max.I found another program that does this, called Cameyo, think I'll try it out.
I came up with a copy of photoshop 5 last year from somewhere that was portable. It worked the same as the install version. I also have cuteFTP portable that is the same as well. These are the only two that I have had any experience with. The Photoshop 5 was A LOT smaller in size if I recall correctly.
