Just installed Ubuntu Gnome 15.04 on a new build. After installing the latest Nvidia proprietary drivers (352) using the method Wendall showed in his "install Ubuntu" video, I now get a blank screen after the Ubuntu loading screen and the display then shuts off (shows "no signal").
Not sure what I did wrong because I used this method on another PC using the same version of Ubuntu and the same GPU and it worked just fine.
Any ideas on how to fix this? I've tried searching, but most solutions require you to have access to the terminal, but I can't because I can't see anything. :/
System specs:
Pentium G3258
GTX 760
400GB HDD
Gigabyte GA-H87N-wifi
8GB ram
Thanks.
Try pressing CTRL-ALT-F1 should bring up ttyl
I have don't remember his method in the video but i use PPA to get it done just look up edgers ppa and install it that way.
do take note of the warnings at top of page.
you will need to do what lessrshoe said with tty1 then remove the current nvidia driver and install the driver from apt-get install nvidia-352
after that you can then remove the added repository or leave it in some people don't really like PPA, I have not had one issue with the edgers one i leave it added so it shows updates for the video card.
its possible that you see no signal if the video driver is messed up try a different connection on the video card. when i was learning to do the video installs i had a similar issue and had to move the cable to a different output.
Where did you get the drivers from?
I run nvidia 352 also on a gtx760 in Xubuntu 15.04 and kernel 4.0.4 without problems
Try to start with the "nomodset" option in grub this will prevent graphic drivers from loading
If you load to GUI change your nvidia drivers to say 346 and see what happens.
As @epsilont suggests, try adding nomodeset
to your GRUB-config. That should allow you to do CTRL-ALT-F1 or similary to get a Terminal up if X still doesn't show. Follow the instructions here
Got the drivers through aptitude using the mamarly PPA repositories. Followed the exact same steps I took last time but last time it worked fine.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Much appreciated.
When I hold shift after the BIOS splash screen, the GRUB menu does not come up. It just continues to boot as usual, then goes to no display. CTRL-ALT-F1 does nothing.
You said you installed this before was it on the same version of Ubuntu?
Yes. Different motherboard and CPU but same GPU and version of Ubuntu.
Update: I just tried using the HDMI and DVI outputs from the GPU and no change. Still no display.
I suggest you start over with the install and get grub before installing new graphic drivers
this way you will have the option of saving your Desktop environnement if need be.
I haven't really done much with it yet as it was just a clean install, so no loss in starting over. :P
Don't understand why it didn't work as it did before, following the same steps. Meh, learning is part of the Linux experience. :)
So when I boot from the USB, I should add the "nomodeset" to the GRUB then run Ubuntu and install from there?
Ok, I reinstalled Ubuntu, edited the GRUB config, then reinstalled the new drivers and so far all is well. I installed 349 this time instead of 352, just in case 352 maybe wasn't quite as stable (since it's the latest). Restarted the system and it seems to be working ok.
Thanks for the help. Much appreciated. :)
One thing that's odd is when I open "additional drivers" it shows that the open source drivers are still in use even though in the Nvidia Settings it's showing 349 is in use. Meh, it's working and I'm happy. :)
