yeah if you make some plastic standoffs maybe.
You could also go to a junkyard, maybe you find a case there, which you can use.
Or just use the motherboard tray of that, you can allways paint it. ;)

And as long as you ground your mobo tray, HDs, etc you shouldn't have any major issues with static (and of course keep cats, dogs, woolen jumpers, cans of coke or cups of coffee away at ALL times)

I can get some 2 by 4s and cardboard, i was thinking that i drill the mobo on to the wood and then cut into the cardboard for air flow and so that the occasional can o coke does not fry the circuits

Got you covered I have a case (old used E-Machine with a bad MB, but ATX might have a bad PSU in it also, fully populated) you can have for free, you just need to come pick it up, or pay for the shipping which would be more than buying a $30 case locally, but the offer is there, BTW I'm in the mid-west, if you think you might be close PM me.
other idea what i till do with a AsrockQ1900m (as router) i will screw it into the wall. So it will look nice, not that much dust will polute the mobo (like having it laying around somewhere) and no trasj woll ever be able to touch it so this is the second cheapest variant because you just spend some bucks for screws.
