Very simple, just list the media players that meet your fancy and why.
Me: Debian Sid KDE, Video: VLC/Kmplayer, Audio: JuK

I'm using VLC because I'm not a hipster and/or I'm too lazy to research something better.
Linux = M player
windblows = Media Player Classic
VLC for pretty much anything because it works and I know what it is. I used to use it on OSX 10.4.x and 10.5.x and on Windows XP. I currently use it on Windows 7 and whatever Linux distros I feel like trying.
XNoise and VLC on free linux distros except on SailfishOS, where I use the stock Music Player, which is like Apollo without FXBooster, but still sounds more "boosted" than Apollo with FXBooster on Android.
Apollo and VLC on Android.
M player linux
MPC on windows
If foobar was available for linux, then I'd totally be using that, I use it all the time on winderp and I love it.
Surprised there are no people raving over amarock, but it's become so bulky now, so I guess I understand.
VLC.
Dang I was expecting some hardcore anime junkies to come in with their superior knowledge of video players to school us in why we should use xyz for playing the epic 4:4:4 10 bit mkv 1440p videos because some of the pixels or something. Apparently everyone just uses vlc or mplayer.
If I could get it working, I'd use MPD and Ncmcpcpp on Linux. I use Foobar2000 on Windows.
The only one I know of that anime viewers use is CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack). It's Windows only I guess and I'm not even sure if it is a media player or if it's literally just a codec package to use with a media player like VLC or whatever.
Audio: Clementine
Video: Parole, VLC or MPlayer
