Newbie verrrry nervous about updating BIOS

So I have a Sabertooth z87 an i5 4670k, win 7 64 bit. I want to do an OC to about 4.0 to maybe 4.2
Never OC my cpu before. Seems pretty straight from the videos on youtube by Asus. They say I should update my BIOS though. Cooler is a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.

But updating the BIOS scares the shit out of me.

I have downloaded the Asus BIOS update tool for the 4th gen intel cores (v2.00.02)
I have the BIOS file I believe. It is in a CAP file, 8 mb, ver. 2103. Is this the one I would select? My current Bios version is 1603.

Also do I really need to update my BIOS? Are the gains not really worth it or are they. I mean what am I looking at here really cause I don't understand the gains if I OC my cpu with or without a BIOS update.

Thanks for your time everyone. Cheers

The answer to that question lays in two other questions
Does your computer work? and
Does your computer work to your satisfaction?
if yes to both then don't update. Who cares it works.

With the flashback feature is almost impossible to brick the motherboard you don't need to worry so much i think ,you have the right bios just do it with the bios installer and it says there it will improve the overclocking so yes do it .

I agree.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it =]

Is there any particular reason you want to update your BIOS?

Look at the release notes, if you don't see any interesting features or fixes, don't bother.

Just make sure the power doesn't get cut off. Most sabretooth motherboards have a BIOS flashback feature that saves the motherboard from a faulty BIOS update. Take @TheUser 's advice, release notes man.

Thanks everyone for your knowledge and opinions. I think i am gonna leave the BIOS alone and just do the overclock. will let ya all know how it turns out.

Cheers to all
thanks again

Ya no worries. Its really hard for you to brick you motherboard. Your board has usb Flashback. So even if you do screw up you can recover your board. And if the worst happens your bios chip is socket friendly so you can replace it.

I was as well. Luckily gigabyte boards have dual bios chips for redundancy, and the bios flash thing works really well.

Well that was not so bad really. Never did update the BIOS but did OC to 4.4 to all cores (synched). Using adaptive voltage and set the core voltage to 1.2. Booted.

Do you all think that voltage is ok for my CM Hyper 212 EVO to handle as far as temps. Or should I back off a little on the volts.

Just a quick update to you all. Did the benchmark offered by Asus. Scored a 70466 on Realbench. Had CPUZ and Realtemp running just to monitor. Didn't turn any of my other background programs off.Kept my voltage in my BIOS at adaptive for the benchmark. No fires . . . AWESOME!

Then I did the stress test for 30 min. Did change my voltage from adaptive to manual, in my BIOS, so as to limit spikes. Temp. never climbed past 71 Celsius. Think I am gonna stay put with this. Probably could push it but at this point see no need.

Thanks again to everyone's input.

Cheers

Awesome man, Enjoy the extra clockage!

You're afraid of updating your BIOS but you're fine with overclocking? That just seems so incredibly backwards to me.
