New Windows links

Maybe its just me, but shouldn't the default linked sites open in a new window/tab. I'm smart enough and do know that you can simply right click and open in new window. Any time I post a link I make sure it will open in a new window/tab. This this should be the default in the forums.

Backwards compatibility.
Low ram devices like cell phones and older PCs can't handle opening vast amounts open tabs (e.g. I have a friend running ubuntu on a AMD 1400+ with 720 mb of ram and as it stands he can only open one tab at a time so have that as default would crash mozilla everytime he clicked on a new page), cell phones would bog out because on lower end models both ram and storage space would be chewed up.

This is a setting. You can change it in your account settings.

It has been changed. It should be the default.

Not a solution. Everyone on the site uses a newer device/browser.

I prefer the current default - its not hard to change it if you dont like it.

You don't actually know that unless you have user device statistics in front of you, which I don't think the Tek crew has published.

ctrl+click or shift+click for new tabs and windows respectively?

Most people do use a newer device (by newer, it is implied that anything less than 10yrs old) that can handle more than one tab/window. Goddness people, Im just asking why this isn't a default.

Because the default option should be the widest compatible of all options?

Because of the exact reason laid out above. Not everyone has a new device.

And even if everyone had a new desktop not all of us have new phones or laptops or tablets.

It is to ensure that ALL users have the best experience they can. Making everything open in a new tab would no be the best for everyone.

While most of us would be able to open everything in a new tab not everyone can and this caters for that. This is the best solution of everyone.

And you can manually change it as you have seen so there is no problem here.
