I'm in need of a new web server. I've been developing a live streaming website running surprisingly well on my raspberry pi (both the streaming and web server) and it doesn't quite cut it. At the moment I'm in need of something capable of much more so I can better test and develop my website so it can handle more than 1-2 users streaming. Basically I need a pre-built or build it yourself system running a debian-based linux, doesn't matter as long as it doesn't exceed $350, if you can find something better for a cheaper price that would be prefered! At the moment my site is in a very early build, but in the future I need a group of testers, if you're interested in donating your time let me know! :)
P.S. This is just a summertime project for me, I don't plan on actually launching this site for large-scale use lol. I just want to do it simply to see if I can.
You can spin up a VPS for really cheap these days. I use Vultr now after recently switching from Digital Ocean. Vultr gives you 768MB RAM / 15GB SSD / 1 core / 1TB transfer for $5 a month or $0.007 an hour on the low end. You can pick from a bunch of preconfigured Linux distros (multiple versions of debian and ubuntu included), FreeBSD, Windows Server 2012 R2, or even upload a custom ISO or PXE boot the server.
I definitely recommend checking them out. If you do, use this referral link so I can get a $10 credit if you decide you like it! :D http://www.vultr.com/?ref=6805236
if it is running on a raspberry pi then I would suggest trying the free Amazon Web Service micro EC2 instance. Then if you are going to be looking at running a streaming service you could look at setting the EC2 instance to dynamicly change to a larger instance when you are under load, and you only pay when you need the extra power then.
If you really want to have the physical hardware, and only want to spend $350 and it currently runs on a raspberry pi then I would suggest investing in a network switch and try building a raspberry pi cluster.
