Rig:
FX 8350 (Hyper 212 EVO)
MSI 970 Gaming Mobo
So I have never overclocked anything before and would like to know the following things:
How can I safely overclock my CPU?
What would be a good range for my CPU to be overclocked to?
What are the consequences and how can I avoid them?
Is there anything else I should know?
Not looking to do anything ridiculous, I just wanted to play around with it see how the increased performance feels.
Tbh with the cooler you have you are not going to get very far, oc'ed 8350's pump out some serious heat
If you adjust voltage higher
Consequences:
Fried CPU
Fried mobo
CPU life span degradation
How to avoid...don't let it go over 63C
Thought about that... well I guess it's fine I mean I'm not going to upgrade the cooler I just wanted to see if it was at all possible
It's possible, you CAN get results just by tweaking, just turning up voltage is what makes it hotter
@Fouquin is far and away more knowledgeable than I
What is specific mobo model
I think that 4.4GHz / 4.5GHz should not be an issue with the Hyper 212 evo cooler.

Spending on the chip I would recommend he undervolts it first at stock then increments.. Uhmm.. If he needs to be more safe.. 4.2 or 4.3 is safer.. Especially if he is new and getting the hang of things
Depending a bit on the motherboard, i´m not that familier with Msi click bios.
But i think if he bumps the cpu multiplier to arround 22 x 200 bus.
And set a static voltage at about 1.38V, i think that should do.
Disable turbo core, and power saving feutures etc.
Man I'm gonna need to look up some tutorials x) but this is good info thanks you guys
You're lucky though since you're running AMD, they included a overclock test in their software. My best advice is run the test, go into your BIOS, and set the clock to < test value > -200MHZ, and you should be running steady.
After the value is set, run tests. more tests, and if possible, some extra test. The harder you press your CPU while clocked, the more sure you are it will run while gaming with your friends.
Im currently running a 3,7GHZ cpu. And when i ran the AMD overclock software it crashed at around 4,3-4,4GHZ, give and take some, so i set my CPU clock to 4,2. Nothing grand but it is still 500mhz gained.
Ignore the "ASUS Motherboard" part for now, the fundamentals are all similar enough that it makes little difference. If you need advice on your motherboard's BIOS, google some reviews and see if one of those dedicates a page to a BIOS tour, they will usually give a good brief on what the settings are and do.
I'm running a MSI 970A with FX 8320 on a Corsair closed loop cooler and this was my first OC foray back in December. Fairly simple BIOS to learn and I used exactly the guide @Fouquin linked above to get the basics. Utilized the BIOS OC profile saves frequently, and it was very user friendly. Just be on the lookout for any strange symptoms in your build later on down the road - I ran stable gaming at 4.5 for about 2 months then randomly got a new game (Sword Coast Legends) and was experiencing odd crashes during load screens. I initially thought it was because the game didn't like that I was running Steam on linux, but when I backed off my OC a little it completely resolved the issue. I've been happy every since. Good luck and have fun, it's a great hardware set to learn on and a fun learning experience!
Interesting question. Does anybody know of a guide or book that goes into the details of overclocking CPU and memory? Most of the tutorials out there seem pretty shallow. They just tell you what to do and what not, but fail to explain concepts behind it all.

Awesome thanks for the advice!
