New tabs open blank on Chrome?

So since Safari has been giving me fits since the recent "update" to the OS, I had to start using Chrome because it's not giving me issues for whatever reason. I have my settings set for google to be the page that opens on startup and when I currently open new tabs it's blank? Doesn't go anywhere. I know it's probably silly but how can I make it open n google when I open a new tab? It was doing it earlier today but not now?

Open up settings and look for the "On Startup" thing, then set that to "Open Specific Page or set of pages" and set them to whatever you want.

I did that and no go. I get Chrime to work with the home page button on the toolbar but regardless of what I enter there the new tabs open up blank.
