Recently I setup a PC with freenas and I was getting 100mbit transfer speeds. I upgraded my cables to cat5e and some cat 6, but then I realized if all my PCs are gigabit capable, but my Linksys e5200 router only offers 100mbit via the Ethernet ports Thats where the bottleneck is. So I was wondering if I get a gigabit switch and set it up will my nas transfer speeds increase from the 100mbit bottleneck since all the traffic is internal and limited to my network or will the router still limit the speeds to 100mbit?
This is how you would set it up, you would have the internet going into your router, then 1 cable going from your router to your switch, then all of your devices attached to the switch. That would keep you at gigabit internally.
the router will not affect your local speed, a small 8 port gbe switch is probably cheaper but u may also want to upgrade ur wifi as well
Thanks, I appreciate the help.
