New PC Build... Help a Noob Out!

Hello People of the Internet!

I'm looking forward to build a PC, primarily for animation using MAYA 2016 - and a little bit of gaming on the side. However, there is not much I know about creating a PC or choosing the appropriate components. The guy from whom I plan on learning has asked me to at least get a Core i7 (even if its 1st gen) and a GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM.

I'm looking forward to a decent ASUS MOBO with i7 2600 and GTX 760 with 650W Antec PSU. However, I'm a little concerned about potential compatibility issues - if there are any to begin with.

Since I don't know much about what I'm getting into, your help is highly appreciated! If you have any general advice about PC building, I would love to hear that as well!

Thank you!

You can get a system to fit the bill pretty cheap. Craigs List is your best bet for fast, local, and cheap.
A used Dell XPS from a couple years ago with a 4770, 4771, or 4790 would kill it. You can add in a cheap video card, a 4GB 960 can be had for not much more than $100. Altogether you could easily get something for under $600. Maybe closer to $500 if you find a good deal. Even cheaper if you go back another generation, but I wouldn't get older than a 3770 because older only has PCIe 2.0.

You want at least 16GB RAM and 4GB VRAM.
As far as I know, Maya likes fast CPUs but can make use of CUDA aswell.
So an i7 is a good bet for you.

Note: Do not buy used PSUs

Just for example, you can get something like this for $300. Upgrade the video card. You might need a new power supply, but you'd still be under $500. Add on some memory if you want and you are right at $500.
