Killed Windows with fire and now run Ubuntu 14.04. I've tried it just a short time with Virtualbox. So i really don't know what i'm doing right now but i want to learn.
Question is: Where and what drivers do i download for a GTX 670 card? Or do i need to change? Now it says i use X.Org X Server (Don't know what this is)
NEVER EVER DOWNLOAD A DRIVER OR A PROGRAM FOR A LINUX INSTALL FROM A WEBSITE, AND THAT INCLUDES OFFICIAL WEBSITES FROM MANUFACTURERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's not safe, and not optimized for your install!!!!!!!
What you do, is enable the multiverse repository in Ubuntu, and then use Jockey to install the nVidia driver.
It's really easy, just hit <Alt> and start typing "jockey", and an icon will be shown that says "Additional drivers". Hit enter, and then click to select the latest "Proprietary nVidia driver" in the list that is shown. Click Apply. It will do stuff and tell you when it's finished. After it's finished, reboot. Done.
Zoltan, would you mind explaining the difference between the drivers from nvidia's website and the method you described? I am still very new to linux and do not understand why it would be a problem. Will your method install a different driver? don't i want the newest driver because it has the newest features and optimizations? Sorry if this is a really noob question
The driver installed within the driver application is actually tested and automates the whole process. Basically its going to work and without (relatively) any hustle, instabilities etc. Nvidia drivers are notoriously difficult to install manually. The driver in the additional drivers application are a bit older than the ones in the official site but it will rarely make any difference. Listen to Zoltan and save your time.
Apologies for the frankly shit advice on my half. Was half asleep when I posted that.
I was unaware that the nvidia driver install worked in a similar way to the AMD stuff (as I simply haven't used any nvidia hardware under the linux kernel)
This is good information, but buyer beware (this is a bug, nothing to do with what he posted.) If you're using a 1440p monitor, specifically I'm using the xstar korean monitor, it probably won't work after updating with this set of drivers. Mine wouldn't work and I just reinstalled Ubuntu to get it rolling again.
Solution A: decompile the drivers and in your own build environment recompile according to rig specifics.
I know I just said a whole lot of work in 10 words or less, and if it makes sense to you chances are you dont need to be told this route.
Solution B: smxi and i think the cmd for graphics section is sgfxi. (might have changed recently its been a while since ive had to use the resource.) http://smxi.org/
I think I wrote a tutorial on this once - let me see if I can round it up.
If youre new to nix or have made a sport out of distro hopping, smxi scripts will greatly dull the edge on getting your rig squared away correctly.
