I’m aware that the internet is full of reviews of monitors and graphic cards.
I’m actually hoping for some tips and hints from a real consumer’s pov and not from youtube benchmarks as I’m surely not the only person who gets some work done and plays on the same machine, in a multiboot setup.
First of all, why IPS: I had at some point an Acer Predator XB270H (27" 1080p 144Hz VA, the one without G-Sync) next to my Dell S2740L (27" 1080p 60Hz IPS). I prefer the IPS due to the viewing angles. In a couple of minutes of using the Acer, I felt the need of repositioning the screen or my chair. The gaming experience: I had high FPS on both monitors when playing well optimazed and not so demanding games like Grid Autosport/TF/Mobas/Indie games. I did notice a better experience in World of Tanks and also the smoothness when simply moving the cursor within a browser, but it’s not worth the trade off.
Why 2x 27" instead of 1x 34". I find that 2 screens offer a better way of controlling the workspace due to the fact that each screen can be divided in halves (super key + arrows) and thus offers a better window placement + a higher resolution.
The 4K monitors: I actually planned to downscale the resolution on linux to achieve a higher DPI, while in windows I would probably be playing at a lower resolution depending on the graphics card (Battlefront, Overwatch, etc …)
The 2K monitors: I’m thinking that 75Hz would provide a better experience, but is it noticeable or worth sacrificing half of the resolution?
I am aware that I can’t game in 4K (maybe not even 2K) with a GTX770. I was planning on buying a new AMD card, but Vega just shipped and it’s too expensive (at least in Eastern Europe). So either RX580/570 or a better nVidia card if truely needed. I found those two monitors as having great prices for what they offer and I am willing to sacrifice some smaller bezels for 100$ (e.g.: LG 27UD69 vs LG 27UD58 ). I don’t plan on changing anything else yet.
PS: The monitors would be mounted to a set of arms ( maybe you guys can recommend me a good one on amazon ).
Questions Recap:
Has anyone tried scaling down the resolution on linux? Is it the same as the scale feature on macbooks?
Can you propose an alternative monitor with similar pricing to my findings? Is there a bang-for-a-buck model that I’ve missed?
What graphic card would you guys pick for each monitor setup having in mind the game titles I’ve mentioned + working in linux? Would a GTX770 blow up when booting 2x 4K monitor (j/k)?
As owner of a 27" 4k Panel(P2715q) i will recommend a bigger panel, for windows and productivity you need to rely on Scaling or just being to close to the Monitor, i have 20/20 Sight but still the letters are too small for me to comfortable reading, if you use scaling on windows usually need 125%-150% still too big/small and some programs don´t even scale.
On Linux i cant comment, but i will recommend atleast 40" for 4k, or some mix of 4k and 1440p/1080, im currently using the 4k panel to game and a 1080p(P2415) for Productivity and other stuff like youtube, a nice main panel to game and Smaller/lower Resolution for other stuff.
I got my hp 27vx at best buy for a little over a hundred bucks just b4 christmas. It was one of those killer refurb sales that never show up on pc partpicker.
Sometimes amazon has these great sales that only last a few hours
Also one has built in speaker (acer) so you may be able to get a cheaper model without the speakers (unless you want them)
I also have a GTX 770, if you spill coffee on your rig like I did your probably ok
Let me start by congratulating you for the great choice with the Dell P2715Q for the 10-bit color depth panel.
Having the 4k screen scaled up to 150% would result in an 1440p with a higher DPI.
The ideal screen resolution for 27" is 1440p, while for 24" it’s 1080p (if I’m not mistaking).
Would you say that the text or the edges of icons and other elements are smoother on P2715Q compared to P2415?
I’ve looked up your monitor and got this:
horizontal refresh rate 94 kHz
vertical refresh rate 76 Hz
I’m guessing it’s labeled as a 75hz monitor because of the lowest value.
Have you ever tested the difference between 75Hz and 60Hz?
LOL actually I was just relieved it worked when I plugged it in. All this time I assumed it was just a standard 60 hz
Thank you
It replace the monitor from this unit
It was only 20 inces but the color was amazing and stuff just looked better then on a 24 inch we also have in the house.
Especially after my wife “cleaned” the 24 inch with a green scrub pad.
Monitor was first my daughters, then mine. After seeing her new monitor after 6 months I was like "I gotta get me one!"
When it came I saw the new one had speakers, "You want the one with speakers?"
No hesitation, "Yes!"
Stuff gets swapped around here often
Honestly I really never saw a difference with the higher refresh rate
Everything its smoother on the p2715q vs other panels that i own, even vs Ultrasharp displays of 24/21 inches, the 24"(its a P2414H i have just checked the panel info) its good but i think that i got spoiled by the 4k Panel, because the Colors and the Image looks washed up its still a good second monitor tho.
