I bought a Velka 3 in the beginning of 2020 and it’s been sitting there with no computer parts to go with it. Any ideas for what kind of hardware to put in this thing? I’ve already got a 2x16GB 3200 memory kit lying around. Open to all ideas, but the new Intel 11th gen T SKUs look like they could be worth it. Ryzen doesn’t seem to have any desktop SKUs at 35W
Maybe you can hold on a bit for the new APUs if AMD ever releases one…
35W will be tight for a Ryzen system, but an RTX 2070 mini or something like that paired with a 3700X or 5600X is really sweet and doable in that case, and 65W is not that much of a step-up. Depends on your budget though of course.
Budget is flexible. I thought about getting a 2070 mini, but this probably won’t be used for anything too GPU intensive. I’m considering iGPU with low power envelope so that the PSU fan doesn’t scream, as I’ve heard is the case for many people
Probably a 4750G with a b550ax and an Alpenfohn black ridge will serve you well
Ooh I do like the Alpenfohn black ridge, but I think it’s a tad too high for the Velka 3
Yeah, unfortunately this is the case. The Velka 3 case only supports the Noctua NH-L9i to my knowledge. In any case, I’d wait until the 5xxx Ryzen APUs are out and make a decision by then.
Yeah that’s a good idea. I guess ideas for PSUs would be welcome though. From what I hear, all the flex-ATX power supplies come with loud fans, and I’m not too sure which ones are reputable for that form factor
If you wanted to build something now I’d say too go for a 4750/4700G build since you’re not gonna do anything GPU intensive on it.
You could even make a small home server with a bunch of 2.5" inside since you won’t be fitting a GPU in it.
P.S. for the PSU you could get one of those pico PSU (I can’t recall the famous one) and a laptop brick. That would eliminate the PSU noise issue, but it won’t be as cost effective for sure!
May be able to push luck, with an 65W chip [S grade Intel / Ryzen 5], on a L9i HS
Perhaps ITX variants of RTX2060 / GTX1660? [when more appropriately available / priced]
Yeah I’ve considered that. Just need to look into reputable suppliers.
Yeah I’ll probably end up going L9 from Noctua for the cooler, probably the chromax edition so it’s in black, or just by a black fan, since I don’t mind the fin color being gray. I’m not sure if I actually need a discrete GPU. I kind of like the idea of sticking like 4 SATA SSDs in the GPU area instead and have a tiny storage server.
