So here they are, the new iPhone 6 and creatively named iPhone 6 Plus.
Nothing really interesting here at least from a hardware perspective. Apple has finally caught up with a mid-range Android phone from two years ago.
So if anyone cares:
Specs:
iPhone 6:
4.7" Display with a resolution of 1334X750 (326 PPI) (No Sapphire Glass or whatever they mentioned earlier. No Gorilla Glass either so it will still shatter and scratch)
20nm "A8" Dual-core 64 Bit chip made by Samsung and TSMC with a Umagination Series6 GPU.
1GB of RAM
1810 mAh Battery
8MP Camera that also shoots 1080p Video. Claims to have "An all new sensor"
iPhone 6 Plus
Same as the iPhone 6 but
5.5" Display @ 1920X1080 (401 PPI)
The camera will have optical image stabilization as opposed to ust digital on the iPhone 6
No word on battery capacity. Apple claims it "Should be as good as" the iPhone 5S.
Both now have NFC capability (finally) and a rip off of Google Wallet called Apple Pay.
$199 on contract for the iPhone 6 and $299 on contract for the iPhone 6 Plus. Pre Orders start the 12th and it will be fully available the 19th.
So yeah pretty underwhelming. Nice to see they finally threw a bigger screen on it though.
Can't wait for people to claim Apple invented the phablet and large screen phones in general...
Ohh there was also the Apple Watch which looks nearly identical to the GalaxyGear from Samsung....
I mean, I know your average person isn't going to care about specs of an Apple device, they'll buy it because it's Apple. And even if it did have more RAM I still likely wouldn't buy it. But does anyone else think they really need to have at least 2GB of RAM now?
They Definitely should of put a 2GB Ram on these phones a long ass time ago Disappointingly they didnt. The good majority of Android phones are already shipping with 2GB to 4GB Of Ram as it is. Realistically I still believe that caring about Specs on a phone is a bit dumb, and My reason for it is that its getting to the point where is it truly making sense? These Phones aren't workstations or something to brag about. Are you going to walk up to your friend and say oh you suck cause my phone is more powerful and cheaper? Or at least my privacy isn't being invaded. Probably not. Also No app is utilizing the full Power of these phones, however I do believe the Resolution should be there. Either way I do give apple a +1 for making a bigger phone cause that iPhone was WAAY too small.
Well just because you wouldn't be bragging about specs doesn't mean they don't matter.
Phones can feel sluggish which is a serious issue to usability, especially when you need to use a function on them, like the camera, quickly.
Additionally, there are some fairly intensive apps available for both Android and iOS and, like in the case with iMovie on iOS, they do tend to struggle a bit. While of course this is by no means common, apps will be getting more and more resource intensive as time goes on and when most people have a phone for two years or more it becomes an issue.
It definitely does need more RAM though especially for internet browsing and multitasking and the relatively low resolution screens are stupid.
This circle-jerk thread is pretty pathetic... I would love to know which mid-range Android phone from 2012 had 128 GB of built-in storage, a 64-bit processor, and a 1080p screen, capability to record video at 240 FPS, and optical image stabilization. I'm dying to know, DerKrieger.
What you all seem to forget about specs (besides ram) is that a dual core of 1 cpu != a dual of another cpu. iPhones continuously poop all over Android phones when benchmarks come out. Specs aren't everything and iOS tends to run much better than Android does regardless of the "lower specs".
I for 1 will be switching away from a rooted Galaxy S3 running Cyanogenmod and a Nexus 10 to the iPhone 6 and probably the next iPad. I can't stand how fragmented and shitty Android runs on my devices. Even my old iPhone the 4S runs perfectly fine 3-4 years later. I tried using my Galaxy S3 as a GPS in my car, and the phone decided to restart itself 7 times on a 4 hour drive. The phone also consistently crashes while sending text messages. That was happening both with and without a custom rom.
iPhones work right out of the box. No need to de-google like you have to do with the spyware infested android phones. Relax, I'm an android user.
They are aesthetically pleasing and relatively ergonomic unlike the vast majority of android phones. Hold one and then grab a samsung. One "feels" like a piece of well made equipment, the other like a plastic appliance. Relax, I'm a Samsung user.
The iOS software integrates seamlessly with other apple products and works well with Mac OSX, which is a superior OS to windows in nearly every way apart from gaming. BSOD, updates that highjack your system, drivers issues, etc... Relax, i run Win XP on one of my spare laptops.
You guys can't see the woods for the trees. Why so fixated on processors, RAM and 1440p resolutions on a phone? You're not going to use one play Crysis, act as a 24/7 server, or hold it an inch from your eyes for the processor, RAM or resolution to be relevant.
The few drawbacks i can see are that:
They are getting bigger. Even the basic iPhone 6. I hope it's not too big now to be ergonomic.
Another legitimate concern is the iPhone batter life. Dunno if this has improved.
The base model has limited on board storage if you are media hungry and don't want to stream. The other models are ok vis-a-vis storage.
