So the new Skylake stuff coming out soon, will they work with a lga 1150 mobo ?
Also when they release will the older cpus be likely to drop in price at all ?
Cheers :D

While I can't say what socket Skylake will use (not sure that's been addressed by Intel yet) I can say that typically CPUs almost never drop in price by any significant margin.
unlikely that it will be on LGA 1150 but you never know like with the devil's canyon 4690k and 4790k
also its basic economics that older CPUS will become cheaper as demand for them will drop and vendors will want to get rid of old stock so its not taking up space
Price drop on intel cpu's? lol no have a look at the older i5's and i7's there pretty much still the same price.
Skylake will be LGA 1151 so no as thats a extra physical pin needed in the cpu socket
Ok all thanks for the quick clear up, cheers !
Just to clarfity if I'm understanding correctly.....
If I'm right in thinking the current line of cpu/mobo will not be compatible with the next generation of gear, regardless of it being amd or intel ? So for example if I got an i3 now, I could only upgrade as far as the current i7 before I'd need a new cpu and board right ?
Z97 boards can use Broadwell. Other than that, yes. New stuff from here on out will require a mobo upgrade.
Cheers man, so many options !!!! I guess we're in an awkward stage right now :D
Think I'm going super cheap amd with my build now, will get me through for the next few years !
This is a great question because I feel a need to upgrade to i7 from i5-3570k just to get the hyperthreading because now I'm doing video capture/edit/rendering with my PC and want to be a bit smoother than my previous gaming only intentions allow.
But I don't know if I should go with Z97 or wait for the new Skylake, I suspect the Skylake stuff won't be as big an improvement as usual for Intel if only because AMD hasn't been quick to evolve their chips which push Intel to impove faster.
I'm more likely to go with Z97/i7-4790k but am still wishywashy about it as I don't want to have to upgrade every 2 years and if waiting 6 months for Skylake will show much better performance than a 4790k today I'll wait, otherwise I'll jump on it now.
Any thoughts?
What are you upgrading from?
z77
i5-3570k
16gb DDR3
GTX 970 FTW+
Skylake will be released on a totaly new platform. Z170 H170 chipset boards with socket 1151.
So no backwards compatibillity with 1150 Z97 mobo´s.
Well maybe a 5820k would be a nicer cpu for you.
But yeah of course X99 comes with a little premium price.
To take advantage of the hyper threading, since he does video capture and editing, but i think he should jump to a six core so that he has more actual cores not just a quad core with hyperthreading.
Yes i agree,
of course a 4790k is also a decent cpu for rendering etc.
But indeed a 5820k would be a better allrounder, for productivity and gaming.
I had overreaded his ussage somehow...
The economics of it is the biggest thing really, with the 4790k I can at least use the DDR3 I have, even add to it rather cheaply to get to 32gb.
If I go for the 5820k, I also have to get into the DDR4 memory. Think the difference in price between the two builds would be something like 450 bucks to get into the 4790k with mobo, vs. about 925 for the 5820k/mobo/ram, assuming I also want to get into 32gb from the jump.
The 4790k build I can do next month, the 5820k build I need to save up about 3-4 more months to get into, I can be patient, but then it's a matter of if I'm gonna settle for the 4790k in the end I may as well act as soon as possible.
I do think I'm gonna save up and get into the 5820k though.
Thanks for the input guys.
Thats totaly understandable.
Its a bit of an issue with X99 builds basicly, the 5820k is damm good value for money, and if you do productivity and gaming, you allmost cant get arround it.
However DDR4 prices are still way to high imo, and thats basicly the biggest downside of it.
any how, the 4790k is still a decent chip for rendering etc aswell.
So it will not be an bad investment anyway.
Well the one thing I've read about Skylake is they will have chips compatible with DDR3, the unknown factor will be, are the chips gonna be good or complete shit? It's an X factor we don't know.
But because AMD hasn't made a new entry into CPU's it's not really driving Intel to grow as fast as they would if AMD had a newer and cheaper chip out there. I'm team Intel when it comes to CPU's but like any business, unless the competition is nipping at your heels you're just not gonna throw as much into the R&D budget you would if you had stiff competition.
Would be nice if there were 3 chip makers wouldn't it. sigh
well im personaly doubting about skylake and ddr3 backwards compatibility.
Since intel will come with a totaly new platform Z170 H170 chipsets, and manufacturers need to build new socket 1151 mobo´s.
So i dont think that it will happen.
Well it's not gonna be backwards and forwards compatible, from what I've read there will be two levels of Skylake chip, one DDR4 one DDR3. So, only time will tell how well that gets implemented by board makers.
yes definitely, of course i can be totaly wrong.
But i personaly dont expect any DDR3 skylake support, atleast not for desktop chips.
